View Full Version : Take action! Facebook Page that encourages injuring cyclists!

If you haven't heard about or seen the FaceBook page that is inciting people to injure cyclists, please go to the link below and copy it into your browser. Report the page (at the bottom) as obnoxious, harmful, and illegal. This page has over 31,000+ "fans" - we need to get FaceBook to take it down.

This is unbelievable.

I rarely go on facebook, so I'm not on top of the needed manuveurs to get where you want, but to report this link, you do need to go on Facebook.

If you copy and paste the link from here, it takes you to the page, but you can't report it unless you go to your own facebook page and put in the link. The report button is on the bottom left.

I reported it. Although I'm not sure they'll remove the page. Although, it is disgusting and I cannot believe 30,000 people have signed up for it.

Free speech is a powerful force, and I don't think that cyclists are going to be included as a protected group in any hate crime legislation for a long time.

My message to Facebook staff:

"This group advocates injuring cyclists. I ride my bike to work every day. My girlfriend is an attorney. I'm sure her large, powerful law firm would enjoy suing the pants off of Facebook if I'm ever injured by a motorist who is a member of this group. Thank you for your consideration."

Page reported to FB this morning... It's really no different then a page advocating a hate crime, terrorism, or other bodily injury. That's not really needed on a social networking site...

I became a fan (which is the only way you can post). I think there might be a lot of cyclists on that site so they can retort.

+1,

With 30,000+ members, all cyclist that get hit should check to see if the person that hit them is a "fan" of this page. I'm guessing they'd have a good case in court. Way to implacable yourself if you do hurt anyone on a bike, stupid people can't help being stupid I guess.

This Facebook page mimics the trash talk against cyclists that has been popping up on talk radio, in print editorials and (worst of all) out of the mouths of elected officials. The League of Americal Bicyclists (http://www.bikeleague.org) has developed a Zevon-ish ("Lawyers, Guns and Money") program to counter this behavior. When shown the error of their ways, media outlets have agreed to pro-cycling PSAs in lieu of legal action.

I'm sure that the folks runnig Facebook understand liability, but a relative handfull of objecting individuals may not get enough attention. I have contacted the LAB and requested that they take a look at this offending Facebook page. I encourage you to do the same.

The morons who create pages like this one will just pop up again on a new page. If a cyclist's rights organization with the clout of the LAB serves notice to Facebook that this won't be tolerated, perhaps the site's administrators will act promptly in the future when people like us report offensive content.

You do not need to be a fan to report this page.
Look on the lower left side of the page and it says "REPORT THIS" just click and report. You can cut and past something from one of the above posts or make up your own report. Either way you SHOULD report this page.

I don't think it will help, either, although I sent in my complaint.

Here's the deal: Many of these posters, puffed up by the anonymity of the Internet, claim that they'll do what they say they'll do only because they're in a pixel-driven fantasy world of video games and child porn.

Once they venture out of their mother's basement, put on a shirt to cover up the wife-beater and actually get out in the real world, they're most likely sniveling little snot machines who make the church lady look like Vin Diesel.

Not that I'm stereotyping, mind you.

Same here. I believe that is a good sign as it may indicate that enough people have posted to get FB's attention and they don't need anymore posts to "get the point." Not saying they will do something but at least the cycling community and other rational people got their attention....

I just literally finished watching a drama for free on Youtube starring of all folks Vin Diesel. The movie is called Strays, it was at the Sundance Movie festival and made in 97'. Talk about a tough guy persona, he wore tank tops pretty much thoughout the movie.

I know this is a thread drift but, you'll have to check out the video's/movies section on Youtube, lots of stuff to see for free.

Bookmark the Facebook page and chances are that you or a family member would check to see if someone is there before they even remembered they were a fan.
A couple detailed screenshots later and it's a powerful tool in a courtroom if needed.

If there was a site that advocated violence against women or violence against children, I suspect it would be reported to law enforcement, politicians and the media. One way or another, Facebook would be pressured effectively to take it down.

Reported.
This mirrors the ignorant mindset "articulated" in letters to the editor in a couple of local papers. Unfortunately, a very few of our fellow riders incite drivers with their behavior and, in today's society, it snowballs. Last summer the Portsmouth Herald published a letter that stated that cyclists were required to "stay to the right of the white line" with no refutation.

I became a fan to make a commment, but A) didn't want to get into that world or idiocy. B) It showed up on my page as me being a fan of this group thus making me look like a douche and also giving this group more marketing.

It is sad that people have so little to do with their time that this is their avenue, but it looks like it is starting to die out. No updates for almost a month and a half.

. . . to anyone I know in the cycling media and I encourage all of you to do the same--and also send it to virtually anyone who may have any interest or leverage to get general or cycling media coverage. I have already sent it to my contacts at VN, cyclingnews.com. and Pez. I'm looking through my rolodex for others.

Facebook may not understand your page reports, but I bet they DO understand negative national media coverage. The best way to shut this down is what others have stated--make them understand the legal liability aspect and how that translates into negative publicity and possible lost revenue.

Yesterday I contacted the Leage of American Bicyclists, suggesting that they include this Facebook page in their rigorous campaign to challenge this type of dangerous trash talk in the media. I've now received a response from the LAB, stating the following;

" ... we are working on it. We've posted how to report the page to Facebook administrators on our page and we're in contact with Facebook to try to get the site removed."

It never hurts to have more muscle in the game ....

Wow. Thanks to BBD and others for trying to get this removed. It is not a political issue or anything of the sort, but a safety issue.

It is amazing that people have the time and desire to go through with something like a Facebook page for something you disagree with. If you do not like bicyclists, then why spend all your time talking about, well...bicyclists?? Unreal.

The facebook notice is in this week's issue of RoadBikeRider, too.
http://www.RoadBikeRider.com .

---Nasty stuff. "I would like to bring to your attention a Facebook group that promotes violent, hateful and illegal activities against road bikers," writes a subscriber named Igor R. "At the bottom of the homepage there is a button marked Report Page. Perhaps if enough people complain to Facebook it may be deleted. Thanks, and here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/yfowfo5 ." According to Facebook, the page has more than 32,000 "fans."

If you got someone like him to weigh in, maybe that will be FB's attention and they'll take it down. As it stands, there are over 32K people supports this idiotic page. Its fascinating to look at the profile pictures of people in this group. Aimee Cooper is a random example. Picture is of her holding her newborn child with her husband looking on lovingly. It just doesn't process. The white trash in rebel flag tee shirts, OK. But there are far too many photos of relatively normal looking people with their children for me not to be just really sad about the whole thing.

Keith A

...OK. But there are far too many photos of relatively normal looking people with their children for me not to be just really sad about the whole thing.I agree completely...it is sad how inconsiderate and selfish many people in today's society have become. Here's a perfect example.

I went for a ride a lunch today (it actually was warmish) and I rolled through a beach parking lot to check the surf. The parking area is shared with a few small restaurants and it was pretty full with lunch goers and people at the beach. I watched in dismay as this nicely dressed man in a upscale car became infuriated while he had to wait on someone backing for him to proceed. I heard him say rather loudly with his window open "get out the way you $#$*@ idiot". He probably had to wait all of 30 seconds, but it just irritated him to no end. I wanted to go up to him and tell him to relax, but knew it wouldn't make any difference :crap:

Unfortunately there are far too many drivers on the road which have this same attitude.
