View Full Version : Mileage for 2009 & last ride this year

I just finished my last ride for 2009...and what a way to wrap up this year. Did 60 miles with eight other guys in 2.5 hours and the weather was perfect. Upper 50's at the start and mid 60's when were done with almost no wind -- which is a rarity on the coast of Florida. The tempo was just right with all but one guy doing their share of the work. It doesn't get much better.

So my total miles ended up at 5263. This is a little lower than expected and hopefully I'll bump it up another 1-2K next year.

How about you guys/gals?

94 rides for a total of 2021 miles... Not near as much as I wanted (goal was 3000, my 3rd year of riding), but my wife went back to work this year and I had to start taking my daughtor to school again which cut out riding to work...

Next year I'm getting paid to go to college for two years, I think my numbers will improve... :D

Finished my last ride of the year last night on the trainer. 36 miles to round out the year at 3600 miles total which was my goal for the year. I'm happy with that considering I was riding an average of zero miles up until 3 years ago. :)

Next year will be 4000 miles, but more will be MTB than this past year.

Just had surgery on Tuesday, that will hopefully allow me to ride more next year.

For this year, I think I rode somewhere around 2,000 miles. Way below what I was hoping for... Like I said, hopefully my problem will be resolved and I can ride more next year!

As of this morning (I've not ridden yet today) 8,541 miles, my lowest annual total in 11 years. I don't know if I'm going to get out today as there's snow on the ground and a wind chill of -4 so this might be it for the year.

MattTuck -- Just curious what type of surgery did you have that will allow you to ride more next year?

At the risk of sharing too much information... Let's just say that there are three contact points on a bike, and my surgery didn't involve hands or feet. I was dealing with a literal pain in the ass, I've been the "butt" of many jokes. the name of the procedure is a Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy, which was to correct side effects of a hemorrhoidectomy last year that never healed properly.

I ended up with roughly 7100kms (4410 miles). Was hoping to do 8000kms but fell a little short. 2010 I hope to hit 9000kms or more with any luck.

Happy New Year to you all.

I took about three months off this year , just needed a break from racing to recharge the batteries. Ended up just north of 8000 miles.

Wow, some of you guys are really racking up the miles. I ended the year with 5377 outdoors, which is the most I have done in a long time. I was hoping for 6000 this year but I got burnt out and lazy the last few months. Next year will probably be less mileage with more time spent mountain biking.

When I went to bed last night I had 7,770 miles for the year. But for some reason way back in January I had set the completely arbitrary goal of riding 7,800 miles this year. Figured I might as well try to hit that goal: I could just ride to work today, throw in a couple superfluous loops around the park on the way home, and hit my target easily.

Then I looked at the weather report: snow showers starting at 8:00AM, continuing throught the day. Curses!

So at 5:00AM this morning in 30°F total darkness I hauled the bike out and went for a ~30 mile ride before work.

Now my total for the year is just slightly over 7,800 miles

...unless I go out again before midnight!

This year although not great for other things, surely was great for cycling!

I closed the year with today's 50 miler. I rode the most of any year since I returned to riding in 2002. I finished with a whopping 11,000 miles... Well, 10,848 to be exact! One advantage of So Florida, I guess. So so riding venues, but formidable riding weather almost year round...

Towards the later of the year I concentrated on slower longer distances 50+ and in the summer on shorter faster ones 35-40. This helped me get a bit skinnier... near my old racing weight actually: 141 lbs (I'm about 5'9").

Also no major injuries... Noticed a great improvement after a RETUL bike fit at my LBS and minor knee issues I had went away 100%. I recommend this re-fit to anyone!

I hope next year will be just as good for me and all of you forum members out there.

Cheers!

Or are they "road" miles?

I'll finish my year with my commute home tonight, and will end up with about 4950 miles. About 150 miles less than last year, mostly due to fewer weekend rides. My kids are now getting of "soccer" age, and I've had to haul them here or there on the weekends in place of getting out on my bike.

I haven't figured it out exactly yet, but I'm probably close to 95% commuting miles - 23 miles per day.

Just missed 5K this year.

Riding season here in the Northland was from late March/early April to my last on-road ride on the 6th of December, just a few days before our 15" blizzard.

Rotator cuff tendinitis restricted the longer rides a bit this year. Hoping to have less difficulties with it in '10... bars will be higher, and saddle tilted back a few degrees more.

6901 outdoor road miles for the year. The December snow kept me from reaching my 7K goal. One personal goal I did achieve was at least 1000 miles on 4 different bikes.

Last ride was 48 miles on Monday morning, temp around 25 with 20 mi/hr breezes. A few snow flurries added to the loveliness.

. . . when the weather here was relatively balmy--41 degrees and sunny. I did 32 miles for a total of just over 5008 for the year. First time I've ever broken 5000--and possibly the last I ever will. I looked at my ride log about the middle of November and thought, "You know, I could really DO this!" Then went out and rode like a madman and convinced several friends that I'm certifiably crazy. Being unemployed opened up a lot of flexibility in my ride schedule. :D :(

Also did my coldest ride of the year the previous Wednesday--it was 17 degrees with blowing snow. I just rode laps around a 2.75 mile loop in my neighborhood that passes by my house each lap--so if I want to bail I can.

Lastly, I feel I have the responsibility to point out that only wimpy girly men count trainer miles. :p

Ha! Over in some other less-civilized forums (Cough cough BikeForums.net Cough Cough) I can be a real dick about enforcing the "Trainer Miles Aren't Really Miles!" dogma, but over here I'll simply say that I don't even own a trainer or rollers & all of my miles were ridden outdoors on the road

...and that trainer miles aren't really miles! They're not! "Miles" is a unit of distance, your trainer didn't cover any distance the entire time you used it, it just sat in that same corner of your basement!

After a chemo induced decrease in miles in 2008, 2009 turned out to be a great year for me. I finished the year with a 40 mile ride to bring my total for the year to 6251 miles. My miles were split between several bikes.

2,287 fixed gear miles, including my first fixed gear century. Of those miles, just under 2,000 were commuting miles.

1,301 miles on the Pegoretti

1,215 on the Look 585, my first carbon bike. It is a very nice ride.

857 on the tandem with my wife.

and 51 miles on various demo bikes.

I rode over 100 miles in 43 separate weeks this year and only had two weeks with zero miles. My weekly average came to 120 miles.

The best thing about 09 riding is that I'm healthy and riding better than at any time in my life. I can't tell you how grateful I am for that. (I'm finding that gratitude is a really nice thing. I get to experience that feeling daily; I highly recommend it.)

I don't know if I'll ever have a riding year like 2009 again, so this year is extra sweet.

Hope all you have a great '10

The last "ride" being a prep session for VO2Max testing on 1/9

Got 2000 more miles than me this year, Bruce (not counting over 2,500 trainer miles, which I do count because they are some of the toughest, being the only "real" hills I climb).

Where are you doing your Vo2Max testing and how are you going to use it?

About 10,650k, same as 6,400 in miles, all on the road. Missed 76 days, mostly to holidays, business travel and moving from Shanghai to Singapore.

Despite the rainy conditions during Shanghai's winter/spring and Singapore in general, only had a complete washout 13 days in the year.

Quality of riding improved after the move. The good news is that for the 15 years I've been keeping logs, while I'm not getting faster, I'm not getting slower and at my age, that's all good.

It's already the New Year here and I'm off for a ride on some wheels I just built. Happy New Year/ Xin Nian Quai Le!

4,255 miles including 3,461 miles outdoors and 794 miles on trainers. Outdoor miles included 849 on the CSI, 1,870 on the Legend, 646 on the Kirk Terraplane and 96 on the Miyata 9-14. Indoor miles included 521 for the Miyata on a Kurt Kinetic trainer and 233 on a Cateye CS-1000, 20 for the Legend on a Cateye CS-1000 and 20 for the Kirk on a Cateye CS-1000.

This was by far my highest mileage year ever. Typically I ride somewhere in the low to mid 2,000 miles in a year with my previous high of 2,857 set in 2005.

I rode 330 miles for a week in Los Olivos, CA with Pete, Keno and Thom Byrnes, and other friends who aren't forumites. I also did 2 full centuries, a few metric centuries and had a great year bike and riding-wise.

I don't agree that trainer miles don't count. My outdoor miles include some miles on the Trexlertown velodrome and some in the Rodale fitness park loop across the street. I didn't "go anywhere" on those rides either.

5,586 outdoor miles

1,811 indoor on the trainer/rollers

7,397 if you wanna include the indoor miles

This total is slightly down from last year's amount of 8,304 (indoor/outdoor), however, we had a ton of rain -- much of it coming along with lightning and thunder. As a result, I got in fewer miles. I did no centuries this year, but MANY more 60-70-80 mile rides -- much of that done solo. I also managed to drop another 7-8 lbs during the heat of summer.

Have a happy and safe new year , all ! :-)

4311 outdoor and 977 indoor TruTrainer miles. The outdoor miles were a little more than half of what I typically do but I went into 2009 with a goal of doing less miles. I wondered how I'd deal with the reduced mileage but I was so glad for the new mindset with all the home projects I took care of.

I'm taking the same approach toward 2010 and will be happy with anything near 4000 outdoor miles. I'll be retired before too long and I want to have something left in my legs for that phase of life.

2216 miles, down from the 3200 in 2008 and disproportionate to the serious time spent thinking about and working on bikes! And not one on a group ride. But riding is just another, fun cross-training element for me with sea kayaking and climbing/hiking the other "distractions". Last ride December 10, the end of our lovely, protracted late fall.

Not a great year for me. I just updated my log for this past year and came in with 2,333. This was after not riding for the most of the first 75 days of the year due to the discovery of late stage lymes disease that was causing all of my left knee issues.

I may get out this afternoon and my goal for this year is north of 3k. We'll see.

Congrats to the gentlemen who's 72 and had over 5,200 miles. Nice going, keep it up. One of my riding buddies is 70 and he did about 5500 miles this past year.

I suspect people claiming that trainer miles don't count because there's no headwind or outdoor elements to deal with. On the other side, there is self-induced resistence if you're up for it, so I hear you. IMHO, I wouldn't count them either, other then towards my overall fitness goals for the year.

For the calendar year my mileage is kinda high because my base mileage started in January for last season, but I started base mileage in November for next season. That's somewhere between 20 and 25 hours/week on the bike, so you can see how the miles would add up. I also made it a habit of always riding to and from any group ride, and I did lots of back to back coaching sessions. I don't have a computer on the bike so I don't have real numbers, but based on hours and the number of rear tires I've worn out and the number of chains I've replaced, I would guess I was over 15K.

Crazy uh? I live north of Kansas City, and I work at Fort Leavenworth. I commuted to work as much as possible. The commute by car is 25 miles round trip, but I often made the commute 70 or so miles via bike. I cycled in way-too-hot weather, rain, hail, freezing sleet, and snow. But I have to admit that this year's weather was conducive to my high mileage.

I also spent a week cycling around Fort Carson, cycling up to the zoo and Helen Hunt Falls (is that the right name) and Garden of the Gods and of course the AFA.

I doubt I will ever do this again, and I went into 2009 knowing this. I ache daily as my body is still tired. Plus being single and recently purchasing my house, well I am hoping to find other interests to share my time ;)

It's an impressive amount of miles for somebody working full-time. Riding to and from work sure helps to add to your total. It's a good thing you're single...enjoy it while you can but be careful not to burn yourself out. Keep it fun.

I went over 9k a few years back and I was happy to be able to say I did that but as soon as the year was over I decided that as long as I was working full-time I'd never do it again. Somewhere along the way it stopped being fun.

About 7000.
Easy to rack up a lot of miles when you can ride virtually any day in San Diego.

Great words to live by. In the last few months, I did cut my ride short because I was not having fun. Like I mentioned, I do not see myself doing this again. My schedule was 1) wake up, 2) lift, 3) eat, 4) commute, 5) work (eat at some point), 6) commute, 7) shower, 8) eat, & 9) bed. I was home maybe 3 waking hours (primarily in the morning).

Last ride was on December 5th, finishing up with half-an-inch of frozen slush and snow on the bike. A couple miles shy of 4200 for the year in about 130 rides. Not too bad considering we have a season called Winter here. I'd be happy to do that again this year. "Skijoring" did good to get 5500 miles in VT.

My last ride was the day after Thanksgiving. For the season, I rode 4049 miles, which is my second highest year ever. I'm satisfied.
