just sold op's with record build. now i need some new wheels.

looking at these rims. I know the excellights would be about 60 grams lighter, but i love the look of the signature counter weight on the excellence rims. I'm thinking of doing the newer chris king front hub, with record rear hub. (hoping some day king will build a rear hub for campy, but im not holding my too worried if they don't.)

looking at sapim spokes with allow nipples.

any other ideas would be appreciated,
happy cycling, Bill

Where are you finding excellence rims?
I have a set with Record hubs built by Peter @ Vecchios. Never had a wrench on them in several k's. I wouldn't hesitate to get another set, but haven't seen the rims other than the rebranded Torelli's.

i googled it and found a british website, not sure if i am allowed to promote them or not.

i am leaning towards the heavier excellence rims with the counter weight.

A couple months ago, there was a guy from Germany selling blue, red, or gold Excellence rims on Ebay. The rims would also appear as rebranded Colnago Excellence rims. I'm not sure if the Torelli Triumph rims

are just rebranded or a different rim.
Either way, the Excellence rims are stunners to look at and are used by many teams for Paris-Roubaix.
I had Peter White build me a set back in '03, and I'm still riding them.

I've been on Ambrosio rims since 2000 when I switched from tubs to clinchers. Monty Young at Condor built my first set using Excellence rims. I then had Paul Hewitt build up a set using Excellights. As the OP mentioned, there's a slight weight difference. Helmet Newton at Sonic built my fixie wheels using Balance rims and I later bought a wheel set that had Colnago branded rims that are in fact Excellence rims w/o the counterweight. Over the last couple of years I've been buying Excellence rims and have them in red, blue and black, all 32's. In fact will be building up a set this week.

Per Ambrosio's site, the Excellence is still being made although I find that their distribution, US and Europe is not great. I've been buying them on EBay from US, UK and European sellers as I've yet to find them in Asia.

Excellence and I recommend brass nipples, not alloy. Alloy does nothing unless you want colors.

I am leaning towards the excellence, although they are heavier than then excellights.

I will check out the brass nipples. thinking about the new chris king front hub and campy record on rear.

Good choices. Remember the primary reason that wheels are 'there' is to get you 'there'. Teeny differences in weight mean little to cycling performance. Small differences in weight 'may' have a large effect on reliability. No such thing as a free lunch.

The Torelli's are just rebadged Ambrosios. The set of Torellis I bought this summer had Ambrosio stickers underneath the Torelli stickers. Any LBS can get you the Torellis, although they won't be cheap (if I remember correctly, retail is $96 per rim and shipping is a flat $15-20).

ItalTecno has the Ambrisio Excellight for $60 per rim with $17 shipping. Their website doesn't list the Excellence.

Edit: TotalCycling does carry the Excellence and their price is just over $70 per rim and they sell the Excellight at $75 per rim.

Shows mass at 430 grams, which is about the same as Open Pros. Which rims are the ones 60 grams lighter?

Every place I saw the Excellight, the listed weight is 430 grams and the Excellence at 460 grams.

Ambrosio Spa lists the weights as 430 for the excellight and 460 for the excellence. I have the excellence and I think they're great---of course.
