View Full Version : Curious about rider measurements

A couple threads lately have me wondering...

While I think there is a good general range for riders by height, inseam, flexibility and reach it is interesting how widely similar riders' measurements can differ and each remain comfortable.

So I was thinking it might be interesting to compare numbers?

Here are mine...

6'2"
34" inseam (long torso)
Good flexibility
80cm from bb center to top of saddle
85cm Back of seat to center of stem
Roughly 10cm drop (top of seat to top of bars)

6'3"
36" inseam
Avg. flex.
86.5cm saddle height
61.5 saddle tip to middle of bars (why do you guys measure to back of saddle?)

No clue on drop as my bike is at home, but my C50's headtube is 193 and I run 10cm of spacers with a 8deg stem down. It's a pretty decent drop though.

Pretty much what I expected.

PS - I measure from the back of the seat because I figure I sit closer to it than the front. That way if I swap seats I'll still be as close as possible to my marks.

6'2.5"
35.5" inseam
Average flexibility
82.5cm saddle height
84cm Back of saddle to center of stem
7-8cm of drop

5' 8" tall (short torso)
31.5" PBH to floor (30" jeans inseam)
good flexibility
72.5 BB center to top of saddle
54 cm tip of saddle to center of bars (Selle Italia SLK saddle)
9 cm saddle to bar drop

I have a more 'down and behind' saddle position. I like for my short torso to feel stretched. Therefore, I use a slightly lower saddle height. I also have long arms (~ 35 inch sleeve in dress shirt) compared to my overall height.

We already had a short guy log in. Didn't you see RPM post at 6' 0"?

Although he does have a 84cm saddle height.

OK, I'll bit.

6'2"
34.75" inseam
78.5cm saddle height-no heel up.
Carbon saddle, no padding and minimal sag. Add 1-1.5cm for comfy seat.

10-11cm drop. Flat land riding drop another 1-2cm.

88cm reach per op measurment criteria minus the last 1cm of shaply swoops on back of saddle.

Flexibility sucks (I can't touch my toe's now) and my back hurts like a sob. Riding is great therapy as flexibility improves and back gets better.

What does all this mean, nothing really.

Lets ride.

A comment on arm length and sleeve length.

Pete mentioned considering arm length for reach, which is a factor.

Sleeve length on the other hand is measured from the center of the back so is influenced by shoulder width. Long sleeve length could still be an average arm length in some cases.

Interesting post alright..

6'3" myself...

Two metrics I would to see... the age of these guys cuz I think the older we get the less drop we like. And just out of curiosity --- what is the Head Tube length on your bike?

By looking at most of the replies - there should be a lot of long head tube bikes here... which I think are the most beautiful ones on the road.. the higher the tube the better it looks.

Other than the fun of posting your own measurments (and I've noticed there are no women in this one), is there a point to this?

A long time ago a guy in NH named Bill gathered up a lot of data about rider's height and inseam and the measurments of their bikes. He then put this all together in indexed charts and sold them in very nice wooden boxes for shops to use in fitting customers.

Fitting has gotten much better since then, but I do like the wooden box...

Short guy here compared to most that have posted

6' tall
34" inseam
80 cm seat hight
59 cm saddle nose to hb
7 cm of drop

Average flexibility but I am trying to work on getting a little more. I don't know what this all means but here it is.

i also wonder if these measurements are before or after
going through an individualized serotta fit program
and what the comparative measurements would be
for both men and women...
...and how these measurements have changed over time.
my own measurements changed fairly substantially
two centimeters in seat post height and cockpit depth
over the last five years as my flexibility has changed
and yet my same bike has remained an extension of myself.
so, i think when we give this string time enough to sink in
and think outside of the wooden box...
...even more of an appreciation for what ben serotta has done
to fine tune bike fit leaves us with our best fit measurements
at this particular freeze frame in our riding lives...
so we can truly 'enjoy the ride'.
