Would a mountain bike 9 speed casset 11-34 work on a Shimano standard road wheel of 130mm? I might need to get a MTB XT derailer to replace the road tiagra, but I assume those are interchangeable, right?

Thanks in advance.

As long as you don't have a 10 speed specific cassette body (with the taller splines), yes.

Isn't there a range limit on the road RDs? I think I read somewhere the person would need to put the mountain RD on as well ... but I could be mistaken

You should be able to get away with up to a 30t rear cog and a road short cage rear derailleur. You'll need to size your chain accordingly, and do avoid going into your big/big gear. If you want to run a 34t rear cog you'll need an MTB med or long cage rear derailleur. Previous post regarding hub splines applies.

I believe there is only one rear hub that is 10 speed specific and its the Dura Ace 7800. It was only around for maybe a year. The problem is because of its limitations - could only use 10 speed cassettes and the bearings on the drive side was inside of the freehub body (similar to Campy) as oppose to the standard shimano rear hub of having the drive side bearing outside of the freehub, it can usually be found fairly cheap, especially on ebay. Good Luck!

A 34T will work with a road rear der if you have one chainring in the front, not with two. But an XT rear der will work beautifully with STI. I use 9 speed ultegra with an XTR on my cross bike, the best shifting bike I own.

If you go with a new XT rear der, you'll need one of tJagwire cable adjuster (http://www.speedgoat.com/product.asp?part=136021) since shimano did away with the barrel adjuster on the rear...

Or any inline adjuster. There are many on the market.

True dat'. I just like those Jagwire ones more than inline adjusters :)
