Interesting.

How can the '59 Bel Air be representative of the new vehicle? I have to believe that lots of rust and other factors will have affected the structural integrity.

Was there an engine under the hood of the '59?

I was thinking the same thing. No doubt older cars are less safe to the occupants and in many cases it's because the older vehicles lack crumple zones. But, because of the lack of crumple zones and one-use bumpers found in newer vehicles, the older ones usually look better after a crash.

Brutal. Add to that all of the exposed steel surfaces in the old car. :crap:

If it's a high speed collision, I'll take a modern car any day. Low speed collisions (15 mph and lower) will favor older cars I think.

The D- Series of the same era was the first with seat belts, front crumple zone, radial tires, rollover protection, side impact protection and collapsing steering wheel. More safety features than anyone else had for at least two decades. It was also comfortable.
