As expected, the Opinion piece of the original article (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/comments_blog/2009/01/doctor-cyclists.html#comments) attracted some real winners

. . . that VN is following this story. I've felt for some time that one of the reasons that not more is done about cyclist's rights to the road is that whenever something like this happens and word spreads across the Internet, there is no follow-up. Cyclists who were originally outraged about it forget about the incident.

I applaud VN's web editor, Steve Frothingham, for making the decision to follow this story and help keep it in the minds of the public, and not just cyclists. I imagine that as the trial progresses you will see more stories in the LA Times and other LA area media about it--and many more half-witted and bigoted comments from drivers who really DO feel as if they own the road and we don't have a right to be there.

For every one of these stories that is kept in the news through to its conclusion there will hopefully be a few more drivers who read about how traffic laws DO give cyclists a right to be out there and will say to themselves "Huh, I didn't know that" and they might, just MIGHT change their behavior and accept that we DO have an equal right to the road.

And for every one of these stories that is covered through to its end there will ALSO--hopefully--be a few more cyclists who read the bigoted, ignorant, selfish, and mean-spirited comments from drivers and decide, "OK, that's IT. I'm not gonna just roll over and take it any more."

there should be a civil action as well.

Not long ago a similar case in Minneapolis. A driver slams on the brakes and opens the driver's door in the path of the cyclist.

Seems as though road rage and cyclists happens anywhere. Last year there was another hit an run case in Minneapolis except it was fatal for the cyclist.
