View Full Version : Which Campy compact crank?

I'm building up a frame with 10 speed UT Campy stuff and wanted to try a compact setup. One option is an older 10 speed Record (50/36) or a 2009 11 speed Chorus (50/34). The Chorus 11 speed is actually cheaper than the 10 speed Record so it's tempting in case I want to upgrade to 11 in the future. Is there any reason to go the Record route? I use a 170mm crank so the pickin's are getting slim 10 speed wise.
Thanks

Will the chain rings on 11 be too narrow for 10 speed chain?
I have no idea myself.

That's what I was wondering. I figured that it would be OK but wasn't certain.

10 speed ultra narrow chain (5.9mm) will work fine either way.

Here's what Competitive Cyclist says about 11 speed:

"11-speed is it's own thing. For one, the teeth are 0.4mm narrower. There are also four separate ramp systems built into the ring, rather than the two upshift and two downshift zones apiece on their 10 rings."

That being said, it seems that it may be worse doing the opposite, using 11 speed stuff like 11 speed chain with 10 speed crank and rings....

I am in the same boat on this. I need to put a new compact on my wifes bike and I want to use a Chorus 11 crank with a record 10 speed chain / drivetrain.

The million dollar question is how does this work?

Can anyone who has actually done this comment?????

I've read reports from users who have done this with no problem. The worst case that I could imagine is chain rub on the big ring with the chain on the little ring and second cog, using a 50/34 compact. This is normally a useable combination, but with the .6mm narrower spacing and a .4mm wider chain, you might get some rub with short chainstays. This combo works fine with an 11 speed chain, of course. If you spend little time in this combo, I would not hesitate to buy the 11 speed crank with the improved hard anodized chainrings.

The CC website is wrong about the tooth thickness. It's only .1mm thinner, not .4mm.

The two chains are nearly identical in width, across the inside of the inner plates. If you measure enough 11 speed links, you'll find some the same width as a 10 speed chain and some a little narrower. I initially reported a .1mm narrower width (just like the chainring teeth), but upon more measuring, I find a range that shows even less difference in width.

I've used a variety of non-Campy cranks with Campy 10 speed drivetrains and they all worked. One of the virtues of Campy drivetrains. I'm sure a few of the cranks I used were farther from the 10 speed spec then the Campy 11 cranks are. I would think you would be able to change the spacing between rings to make it match 10 speed spacing if you wanted to.

I just setup a Seven Axiom Ti with 10-spd Campy. I used older Chorus shifters and bought a 2008 compact Centaur crank here:

They also have Chorus for $50 more:

Someone suggested the Fulcrum RS. I know little about them other than they're made through Campy and are supposedly the Record equivalent. Do they use the Campy UT Bottom bracket?

I use Fulcrum RRS chainrings on a Campy compact crank and they are great (effectively the new anodized 11 speed for 10 speed). The rings were doable but the RRS crank is very pricey (it has CULT ceramic bearings and is effectively a Super Record setup).

If 11 speed works that is the ticket price wise.

I've seen the RS 10 speed for ~$360 so I was wondering if that would be a reasonable choice.
