View Full Version : How's your weather?

Having extraordinary weather here is nothing particularly new, but the past couple weeks have been memorable, so here is a little photo journal.
Monday - perfect autumnal weather, did my favorite ride up to Hyalite Reservoir (in shorts).
Tuesday - weather forecast says winter is coming, so I take the day off to get everything harvested. It was 80 and felt kind of hot.
Wednesday - Snow arrives and makes everything white, but it doesn't last long. Within a day or two the yard is green and only the mountains are white.
Sat-Sun - 24 hours of the strongest, most annoying winds we can remember. Interestingly, the Furnace Creek 508 riders were suffering in crazy winds at this same time. Snow again on Sunday evening.
Mon - Snow
Tues - Cyclocross in the snow. Cold feet, but otherwise terrific fun.
Wed - More snow!
Today - After spending a few days sulking about the loss of our nice weather, I do the reasonable thing: GO SKIING! The first 15 minutes were joyous, with sparkly snow and no tracks except for a few deer. After that the warm grass underneath made it so the snow clumped hopelessly on the bottoms of the skis. I trudge back to the car, still happy that I had some skiing fun.
We have another winter weather advisory for the next few days, with expected highs in the 20s and a low of 5 degrees Friday night. Damn, that's cold for October!
So, how's your weather?

If it gets any colder here I'm going to need arm warmers!

Yesterday was awesome, today rain, rain, rain.
Dry but cool this weekend. Good riding weather. :)
...nice bike!
Greetings from NW Connecticut, where it's been beautiful autumn weather for the last couple of days....but I've been unable to get out on my bike.

Our coldest July on record has transformed into the coldest start to October I can recall.
Considering the last 2 winters were the worst we had in 50 years, I am not looking forward to this winter. :crap:

It's supposed to be 90 deg in mid GA tomorrow. Followed by rain this weekend. Guess I'll have to ride tomorrow. :-)

Beautiful shots, Karin!
For central coast, Calif: sunny, breezy, highs in the low70's and lows mid-40s. No rain (or snow) in the forecast, but we need it badly.

From June to October was the most beautiful weather I can ever recall here in Tidewater. The past month has been glorious!

I've had my new mtn bike for 2 weeks and have to be able to ride it due to rain. my 3-day patio project took a month because of rain. This weather pattern is killing me.
Last couple of days warm and very humid, with heat index over 100 F.
Cold front tomorrow should give us first nice cool weather with lows in 50s and highs in 70s. That's about as nice as it gets for my taste.
Mid 80's and mostly sunny.. It is a tad brisk early in the morning so I had to wear a baselayer today. It rained for about 15 seconds though..
It still feels like summer here in central FL. Went out riding today mid-afternoon in 90+ degrees with high humidity. Ugh. 95 for the high tomorrow and hopefully cooling a little through the weekend so the state Road Race won't be miserable.

It feels like fall came early in NYC. Its been cool, windy, and rainy for much of September. Some really great days with few clouds in the sky but fall, frost, and will soon be the norm.
The upside to the fall is that while New England might have some spectacular foliage now, nothing is quite like Central Park when the leaves start to turn.
:) Your photos and narrative are (almost) enough to make me want to leave the coast for the innards of our great nation. Thanks for the photos and congrats on the start of your ski season. Tahoe and Mammoth had a dusting, but are nowhere near opening yet.

as a former manhattanite, while fall in central park is surely gorgeous, i'd vote for the few weeks in spring when the cherry trees on the east side of the reservoir carpet the running path with white petals. that said, october is without a doubt the best month in nyc.
karin, thanks for the wonderful photos.
here in boston, our fall has been mixed. some warm days, some rain, some very chilly nights and mornings. peak foliage hasn't reached us yet but i'm hoping for a week of indian summer to balance out our dismal summer.

It's just plain freakin' hot in west central FL. Heat index for toaday is 103! I really need a change.

toaday must be some kinda freaky local custom.
Anyway, heark at you: some people just don't know when they've got it good. :)
Here in the Philly area, we had a pretty cool summer and so far a pretty warm autumn. Only a few days where we needed AC during the summer and we haven't turned the heat on yet. A couple of nights into the 40s, but every day has gotten at least into the 60s and even starting off on early morning rides, it hasn't been cooler than about mid-50s. This is my favorite time of the year for riding. Great condition, cool weather, beautiful scenery with the leaves just starting to turn, everything just feels good. Sometime in November it'll start to go south and I'll probably ride very little until sometime in March, but for now, its frickin' wonderful.
Beautiful shots Karin. I love where I live, but I've been lucky enough to live in a few VERY nice spots and I always miss the mountain west and the Pacific Northwest no matter where I am. The snow never bothered me when I lived in Colorado - here in PA it usually sucks after the first day or so. But we don't seem to get much anymore for whatever reason.

Yes, Central Park is every Manhattanites escape from the city.
Can remember as a teenager, we used to speed skate on several of the lakes when they would freeze.

Man, your narritive brings back memmories of going to Mammouth, 2 weeks after my son was born. Can remember driving home to San Diego in the desert
and having two fighter jets buzz our car.You didnt know they were coming till they passed your car from the rear. ( Sonic Boom ) I know they had a good laugh on us. Scared the **** out of us and dust on either side of the road.

. . . many years ago while driving north of Salt Lake City. I nearly ran off the road. My first thought was wondering how many times the same jackass fighter jockey is going to try it for fun before he does run somebody off the road and some soccer mom with 4 kids in the car gets killed.

There is a rumor that the sun might actually exist above the clouds and drizzle around here. It's been all fenders for the past few rides, which works for me. Dry pavement would be nice, though.

Another Floridian chiming in to say it has been HOT and dry this past week. We've had record hight temperatures in the low 90's (even on the coast) with heat indexes in the low to mid 100's -- inland has been even hotter. The night time temps have been crazy too with the lows bottoming out in the low 80's/upper 70's. Our normal highs this time of the year are in the mid 80's and the lows should be in the mid 60's.
On top of all this heat, the Atlantic ocean has been ___________ for the last two weeks. The bad news is the flat spell and heat are forecasted to continue next week :crap:

It's a whopping 7 degrees here this morning! Even though it snowed all weekend, there is not enough to ski on, resulting in weather that's not useful for much of anything. :crap:
By tomorrow it's supposed to go above freezing again, whoo hoo!

I'm starting to stress. October is usually the best month here in SF. That being said, a storm in forecast to make land tonight. The Blue Angels had to cut short their performance during Fleet Week, and I'm ready to switch to a thicker wetsuit (usually done in mid-November). I want my Indian Summer!
