Anyone using these? Came on a bike I picked up, just finished the build, so if it ever stops raining here in Indy, I'll finally get a chance to ride. Just wondering what experience people have had with these, reliability, etc..

Among the fastest wheels ever made. Time trial types love them. They are heavy, however.

I think mine are of that vintage, +/-.
Black, 14 spokes front, 16 rear.
Incredibly strong, durable, fast wheels. Really good.

Nope- the OP is talking about the silver ones- cult like following...

I just got a tubular set of about that vintage (The silver ones). They are on my Cross bike. I raced them last week and have did about three days of training on them. Will race them again this week. So far, I am very happy with them.

These are the exact same. This is first rexperience with Campy wheeels, done all my riding on Mavics, so this info is extremely well received.

Sweet ride! What kind of fork is on that assault vehicle?

Excellent. Then enjoy them. They're great and have a stellar reputation.
Whatever you do, stay away from the 12-spoke versions.

The black wheels above have 14 spokes front, 16 rear (16-HPW).
The silver wheels look like they have 12 spokes front and rear (12-HPW).

The silver rims were 41mm deep and the black rims 38mm, iirc. The silver rims also came in other drillings (Evgeni Berzin's silver Shamals were 16/16, I believe).

I have never ridden the 12-HPW, but I have read many reports citing a much lower rider weight limit (+/- 60 kg) and relatively common spoke damage/breaking.
Here is one such comparison (http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=55772), but there are many others.

That said, for a lighter rider they may be just fine. They certainly do have a cult following, for some reason. I don't know why.

Strange- the cult following is only for the silver ones- which one poster says to stay away from. The black ones have no cult following.

I believe they were the best aero wheels made for many years.....

I once had a set of the silver Ventos that were the brother to the silver Shamals. They were very fast on the flats and seemed to have a flywheel effect where once they got up to speed they stayed there. The problem was that for anything with an elevation gain or for racing/spirited group rides with constant speed changes, they weren't so great with all that rotating weight.

Aerospokes and lime-green rims have cult followings among the hipsterixie crowd....

Man. I get scared riding anything with less than 20 spokes in the front and 24 in the rear and I weigh 145...

I still have a pair of the original 16/16 spoke Shamals that were built with "J" bend spokes. They are bomb proof.
