For example the SRAM crankset with 110 bcd can use these chainrings. Seems like a good alternative to compact gearing at 50/34.

toaster -
i have a red crankset with that gearing but the grouppo is sitting in a closet. i think it'll be a little more practical gearing for me - in between the compact and standard.

I'm running 52/38 on 110 on both my Ottrott and my Meivici. Both are on FSA cranks running with SRAM Red.

Works great, and I have no problem riding with my ffreinds on 53/39's.

Cadence is just a touch higher and climbing a little more comfortable.

But then again, I'm in my 50's and not racing.

That sounds like a really good ring combo. It's still compact gearing because of the 36 and the use of a 110 bcd crank, but it should be really useful for everything.

You don't lose much with the 53 to 52 swap, and the 36 will make the climbs much easier. Sounds like a win win.

Pity I can't get a compact.

The main problem I see with compacts is the wide gear ratio between the chain rings. Granted the 52-36 is slightly closer than a 50-34 (by the equivalent of one tooth), but do you think it’s enough to make that much difference?

Since a 50/11 top gear is plenty fast for just about everyone, why not go with 50-36 if you don’t need the 34 for climbing? Obviously too wide a gear ratio is more important to me than a slightly higher top gear I rarely use.

BTW: The 110 bolt circle has little to do with practical gearing limitations to the up side since we can always bolt on larger rings – hence why I would like to see 110 BC become the new road standard. On my Cannondale tandem I have 54-44-32 on a 110 BC. Some argue the rings may flex more but I must not be strong enough or my expectations aren’t that high because it’s never been an issue.

With Shimano compact cranksets you don't get much of a choice anyway. The unconventional outer chainring shape makes changing the big ring size impossible to the best of my knowledge, so many of us would be stuck with a 50T big ring anyway. It’d be nice if Shimano offered a few choices like 46, 48, and 52 in 110 BCD but I wouldn’t hold my breath. They probably make more money from riders who change from standard to compact, or the other way, than if they only sold them new chainrings.

For that reason I expect they will not standardize on a 110 BCD even if it made their equipment more user friendly.

Not sure if anyone really answered your question but yes I switch regularly between a 52x38 & a 52x36 front chainring set-up on 2 of my rides without encountering any issues, in fact I ran a 52x36 with a 11x26 cassette for Triple Bypass this yr and had no problems or noticable flex. My set-up is FSA Mego-exo cranks, red shifters & derailleur with Dura-ace 7900 cassette...Hope that helps

Bought the 7900 compact 50/34. Probably will want to up the inner to 36 or 38.
