Hi everyone,
I'll be visiting in Atlanta mid October. I have a day free and was wondering if anyone has any tips on decent things to do in the area or a good shop or two that I can check out. (I know about Dick Lane Velodrome but doesn't appear to be much going on while I'm there).
Thanks all,
Ride safe,
Rick

Where are you staying? Will you have a car?

For rides check out:

Theres a century ride just about every weekend of Oct (with shorter options of course), so check out if there is one on your free day.

Bike shops:

All 3 Sports (http://www.all3sports.com/contact_us.php) has lots of eye candy. They are a primarily mail order company and stock more (high end) bikes than anyone in town...but, they are stingy with their bikes, no test ride without a paid fitting session that you have to schedule way in advance.

On the opposite end of that spectrum is The Bicycle Doc (http://bicycledoc.com/). It's a one man show run by Scott, very friendly and relaxed environment, and he'll let you through a leg over anything he's got.

The biggest traditional bike shop is Roswell Bicycles (http://www.roswellbicycles.com/) . They have everything, and most of the guys there are pretty nice.

If you wants some deals you should stop by Performance (http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/StoreLocator_10052_10551_-1_StoreLocatorGeorgia) , and see what's on sale.

Things to do:

Meander through Buckhead (bars and shops) or Downtown (aquarium, coca cola museum).

Visit Stone Mountain (my favorite Atlanta attraction). You can hike up the mountain in about half an hour and see the views of Atlanta from the top of the biggest rock you'll ever see.

Little 5 points is a neat area of town. There is Outback bikes there also. I would also suggest the Virginia Highlands area.

Thanks to everyone for the info. I'm staying at a Holiday Inn Express
(discount rate for wedding guests) and I do have a car.
I'd heard a bit about Little Five Points and I plan to meander through. I'm an artist also and I've read that it is a good community.
Thanks mandasol, I'll add some of that to the itinerary. I'd love to ride down there but it doesn't look like it's happening at the moment.
Keep the ideas coming...

If you want to ride, the Silver Comet is an old rail grade west of town. Flat for the most part, but a fun spin that goes west as far as you can stand and then return. Here's a place that rents and is on the path...

I wouldn't plan a vacation to do this, but a good diversion if you have a few hours, and the tunnel is pretty cool...

Cheers, Chris

Thanks, I don't anticipate being able to ride this trip but I'll save that for a future visit. Great tip.

If you are an artist go check out the High Museum. I remember liking it. Haven't been since my late teens. http://www.high.org/

It appears you will be there just in time for the Da Vinci exhibit.

As far as other stuff, it is totally touristy but the Georgia Aquarium is pretty cool and large.

Also, I recall a really good Cuban/Latin place to eat in 5 points... and if it is still there check out the Star Bar. If you are into roots/twangy music... it could be gone though...
