It's images like this that make me want to do things to my full potential.

Similarly, I was doing a ride several years ago out of Libby, Montana. Suffering up a long hill, feeling miserable and *sort of* contemplating turning around. Until a guy with an artificial leg passed me and put all my wallowing in self pity to rest.

This is also the reason that I like Lance Armstrong. A great symbol.

Thanks Jerk, I'm going for a ride even though it's dang cold.

I once raced against a guy with an artificial leg below the knee. I could hardly believe it. It is hard to complain when you see guys who spit in the face of adversity.

Our petty griping here is ridiculous when we see a photo like this one.

I am humbled.

I really don't get the paralympic events where you're on a tandem.

Could someone with no arms, legs, head, or torso get a a pro rider to stoke for them and claim to be a champion?

Foolish question! Haven't you ever seen the foot of a Bumble Bee?

Certainly makes our complaining about little aches and pains when cycling seem rather foolish. I agree with your comment about the petty griping.

Holy cow! I am in total awe. Makes me want to even train harder now that I see what a guy with one leg is doing. Might be inspiring and demoralizing at the same time to ride against him.

Better? Equal? You be the judge. This is Scott Gadberry at last summers' Olympic Training Center Paralympic Development camp where I was racing tandem with a blind guy. Scott was recently "found" by a CTS coach racing through LA traffic at a blinding pace. Apparently it took them several miles to finally catch him and convince Scott that it was not a joke and he should come to Colorado. The first pic. is of scott finishing a Kilo where on a road bike and this his first time on a track was turning times close to Brad's. Scott is coming out this way in late April to hang with me and my pals. Am I PROUD to know this cat? Oh heck yeah and you can bet he is going to Beijing buddy. Bet on it. Oh yeah, he's lost 40 lbs ;)
*Dominatrix, you need to learn more and than appreciate. The only category for "Paralympic Tandem" is either female/female or male/male and the stoker is blind. There is not category or allowance for other disabilities eg. no favoring. These athletes are the real deal. Typical qualifications for the tandem pilot are to win a National Championship. Pros are specifically not allowed in competition.

There's a big hand-cycle race before the Twilight Criterium here in Athens every spring, and, at the risk of being politically incorrect, there's no doubt in my mind that the amputees have an advantage over the other folks in the race.

I dated a girl in college that only had one arm. She had a mechanical "hook" on the other. Her left arm stopped right above the elbow and she played division 1 tennis to boot.

She'd balance the ball on the racket to "toss" for her serve. Tough girl, good looking, and a great body. She'd get wise cracks every once in a while, and some hurt I'm sure. Heck I got 'em too in jest. If I had a dollar for every guy that said, " Hey dude, I hear you hooked up last night" I'd have a few extra bucks.

I think it's great that people don't let their "handicap" hold 'em back. It's inspirational for those normal peeps that think we've got it bad.

. . . who would say something like that is saying a lot more about themselves by saying it than they are saying about you or her.

BBDave -- Is there anyway to verify the authenticity of your photo? It is too low of a resolution to see any obvious mods to the image and if it is fake, they did a really good job with the shadows and highlights.

. . . the Jerk started it. It's all his fault! ;)

I got the baby photo from a firned who had obviously passed it on from someone else. If it's a fake, it's a good one.

Trust me it is a fake. It's medically impossible but it's a very clever fake.

That is what I suspected. We have three children and my wife is a slender person and I can remember plenty of times when something would be pressed against her belly. However, it was always a smooth protrusion with no real definition. So when I saw that picture, I couldn't image how that much detail of the fetus's foot would be able to come through the womb, skin, muscle tissue and whatever else is there.
