i'd like to recommend watching "the last truck", an HBO documentary on the closing of a GM plant. there are many valid arguments to be made about how the u.s. auto industry got to where it is, but what this film does, movingly, is put a human face on where it is. very worth watching, IMO.

It looked interesting and I almost watched it.

However, I'm afraid it will have the typical HBO super liberal twist.

i know what you mean. whenever i read george will, i always fear i won't survive his conservatism, but somehow i always do. those secret liberal pills we have really seem to work.

I watched.

I worked with non-union factory workers in Canada as soon as I graduated from high school. I saw many get layed off in the early 80's and saw the raw emotions in real life. After 20+ years of middle/upper management the feature brought back some memories.

There is more to all this (also about hbo) but time's limited but my hope is that this country will wake up and turn it's manufacturing base around.

I went to high school in the shadow of GM Moraine. I remember when it went from the Frigidaire plant to a GM plant. Many of the parents of high school friends went to work there when it opened, with many of my high school friends going to work in the plant also.

I would never have guessed I would find myself 10 years after highschool working at NUMMI, the joint venture between Toyota and GM. Now 16 years after that I find myself going back to NUMMI - now working for Toyota and having to watch the plant shutdown and maybe having to decide which old friends at NUMMI get thrown a lifeline of a job with Toyota and which will not.

Not looking forward to it too much - a little to human and too close to home for my taste. If I had not transfered to Toyota 11 years ago I'd be looking for a job right now.

HBO puts out some very good films. My wife and I watched Taking Chance (http://www.hbo.com/films/takingchance/) last night. A very moving film about a Lt Col escorting the body of Marine Chance Phelps home to his family in Dubois, Wy.

I'll put The Last Truck in my Netflix queue. Thanks for the tip.
