We have a new kid I our bike club, Jason Maurice he's rate #1 national at Olympic distance triathlons 20~24 age group. Some of the guys got the idea to do as sub 5 hour century with Jason pulling. I rode with Jason a few weeks ago and only stayed on his wheel for 10 miles so no point in me going. It was hot today (mid 90's) with a south west wind at 15+ mph so all and all not the best conditions for this kind of ride. We seem to be a club of old farts as Jason calls us mostly 50's and early 60's so this kid is blowing us apart. 5 started on the sub 5, one blew out the back after 10 miles, another two at 20 miles and one stayed on for 75~80 miles and did get back in just under 5 hrs. saddle time.

Here's Jason write up:

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: sub 5 hour century in extreme wind and heat
Total saddle time: 4 hrs 50 min. (20.6 mph avg)
Total time with stops: 5 hrs 7 min
Avg Hr: 138 bpm

Sounds like he wasn't even trying very hard...

Yeah we're getting cooked and he's just doing a training ride.

into the wind or with it?
climbing, and how much, or flat?

impressive ride regardless.

It was an down and back, cross wind for around 70 miles tail or head wind for 30 miles. Lots of rollers on this ride, this is what cooked Jack the guy that stayed on the longest, he started getting dropped on the rollers going into the wind on the return leg. I think Jason normally rides the full distance bike leg (112 miles) of a race at 23~24mph average so to only go 20.6 this was a tough ride.

it's not a sub five hour century if you take breaks and extend it past five hours

Isn't the bike leg of an olympic distance tri just under 25 miles?

Yeah, the story is he has qualified to ride the ironman which he plans to race and is training at the longer distances.

We always do unsupported rides, so ya have to stop for water no way around that.

Anyway you slice it, that's an impressive ride. Last month, I rode a 4:44 (riding time) century over rolling terrain (3,500' of elevation gain) with a 10-15 MPH wind (tailwind on the way out, headwind on the way back). We had a group of four motivated, strong riders all taking solid pulls. To essentially do a solo century at the same pace would be very, very difficult. I'll have to keep my eyes out for Jason's tri results.

Regards,
Greg

Especially at that temperature!
