Made it meself; I'm dangerous with a sewing machine. The Christophe strap is mandatory for cinching.
Next, using tarred yacht marlin does an elegant finish, but you have to watch out for this stuff when first wrapping the whipping, the tar is really sticky. Once in place I had just a little clean up to do with degreaser then I used a rag to wipe off the excess. Given time, I think it'll grow hard and become less tacky to the touch.
