OK, so my title is slighltly misleading!

However, during the broadcast the other night they had LeMond in the booth for a while. He said that during the 1989 TDF he had to be given "Iron Booster" shots.

Would those shots be legal by today's standards?

I recall him saying this a few times in the past. No idea if they are banned.

iirc, the shots were near the end of the '89 Giro.

Isn't this really old news ? I think he started getting the shots during the Giro that year to address a severe iron deficiency. I doubt they would be illegal by today's standards.

Old news. The story is his personal soigneur, Otto Jacome, noticed he looked anemic and recommended iron injections. Shortly thereafter he started performing better (2 Tours and 1 Worlds in the next 18 months).

. . . the iron related disorder eventually led to the end of his career.

I thought EPO led to the end of his career - as in the peleton started using EPO...

It was not the iron but the lead his brother-in law gave him that was somewhat blamed for his late-career medical issues. It was later stated that it may have all been an improper diagnosis anyway.

I am no doctor, but I think constipation happens only if you take it by mouth. Maybe that was why he got injections.

Lead shot wasn't banned for use over wetlands until 1991, he was shot in April 1987, kinda doubt it was waterfowl. Woulda hurt pretty bad either way.

Disclaimer: I'm no doctor nor do I play one on the internet.

Iron is very difficult to get absorbed in decent amounts when taken orally. Injections are used to help get adequate amounts in your system.

Lemond's injection is no secret and has been mentioned many times.
