i'm more of a football guy, but hey, it's july.
anyway, i'm watching a game on tv and after a strike out pitch, the catcher takes the ball from his glove and tags the batter who's just standing there. why?

Was the pitch in the dirt? If so, the runner would have the right to run to first base after the strike out.

Yup, if a 3rd strike isn't caught cleanly by the catcher, the batter is entitled to attempt to run to 1st. See also: 1941 World Series.

only if first base is not occupied, unless it is the third out of the inning in which case the runners can advance and the batter can attempt to run to first.

yeah, just as in football, there are rules, and rules that further define and contradict other rules in certain circumstances.

you want to really get twisted in knots, try golf!

It seem like a clean catch, but it is hard to tell on the tele. And it is always best to be safe and not sorry ... a particular White Sox game comes to mind
