Some say Rival presents the best weight/cost/performance ratio, plus some also say that the separate shift/brake levers aid in more secure brake feel/modulation (as compared to Shimano's action).

Truth. Though the 09 stuff is much more pricey than the 08 stuff.

The 08 stuff's price : performance was unbelievable.

It's still good, but it's not anywhere near as nice as it was. I suppose they did change a few things in it, but carbon levers weren't necessary and do add to the cost.

Shimano levers tend to get a lot of sand and mud stuck in them when you crash in a sand pit. The shifting mechanisms of the Shimano levers are very much exposed to the elements, doubly so for the new ultegra and dura ace.
