I’m about to build up a new steel frame, and I’m thinking about trying to go with a silver components build. But as I’ve started making actual part selections, it’s looking like it may be a real challenge to find some items that are silver, modern, light and desirable. So I may abandon ship and go back to a black scheme just because it’ll be easier.

This got me thinking that it may be worth pulling together some links to what’s available out there for those interested in a more classic looking build without resorting to a search for forgotten, dust-covered new old stock…

So chime in and show us what’s out there…

Maybe not super light or sexy but I built a Viner frame up with a mixed Campy group in silver (minus the gray crank) and silver Nitto quill stem, handlebars and seatpost. Oh yeah, and a chromed fork. I think silver is cool because silver is what was ubiquitous when I got into the sport in the mid 80's (despite neon bar tape, anodized parts and such). I think black is easier for companies to do, no polishing required and then ended up as the current standard.

So its do-able even if the weight weenies scoff. Go for it, man.

The new Athena 11 spd group is silver except for ergo levers. See:

All of my Campy is alloy as I prefer to carbon and it is alot cheaper.

Chris King silver headset (not sure if they make silver Sotto Voce, but it would be worth looking into)

Nitto UI-5EX stem if threadless, or Thompson X-2 if you use a 31.6 bar clamp.

Nitto Jaguar or Frog seatpost for setback, Thompson for straight. There are also some Shimano Ultegra silver seatposts made from Easton aluminum.

Nitto handlebars - they make some ergo bars for Shimano too, check on ebay I don't think anyone officially imports them into the US but I could be wrong.

Deda may be making some gray or silver aluminum bars now too.

Silver is the new Black!

Deda quattro stem, speciale bars and metalstick seat post. All polished aluminum. You can get them at ProBikeKit and shipping has been free in the past. See my Ellis 953 for an idea. Thompson has post and stem, no bar. I like all to match and have been happy with Deda.

While weight is surely not everything I was shocked and stunned at the 420gm weight of those deda bars!

I agree with this post. I am intrigued by the Nitto M179 bars.

I know you said you didn't want to go digging around for older stuff, but the alloy SRAM Rival stuff looks really nice and is easy to find.

Shimano Ultegra and Campagnolo Centaur are still all silver. Rival from last year was as well.
