Damien Hirst did the art work for Lance's latest art Madone:

I expect if those are real butterfly wings in the clear coat there will be more then a little controversy for Trek.

I look forward to the day frames are adorned with elephant dung (http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/21/arts/an-artist-who-s-grateful-for-elephants.html).

However, as a side note, it's possible Ti Designs has already accomplished this, his frames are replete with found objects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Found_object) .

As Hirst's butterfly paintings sell for over $150K Lance will easily have the priciest ride in the Peloton.

Still haven't seen one of those "Art" madone's that didn't look like crap.

Is that because of the art or the frame? :p

It's a little too busy for my taste. Heck, what good is it if you can't see what's on it from more than four or five feet away?

.... but you know, if it had "Pegoretti" on the downtube, y'all would be drooling over it.

Regards,
Tom

True Dat!

Not a big fan of this one but I really liked the Giro bike.

I think the concept of art bikes is kinda silly but at least they are going straight to current artist instead of splattn old paint on it and calling it "inspired by".

Lance and Trek have cycling back in the Lime light. Many a frame builders will get future orders as a direct result.

Well, it's all going to a good cause. The bikes will be sold and the money goes to the fight against cancer and as you said Lance's return is bringing more attention to the sport.

If I was going to go outside the bike industry for design I'd look for an industrial designer or graphic designer rather then a fine artist but I'm sure a Hirst bike will raise more money for the cause.

All the colors and stuff played tricks with my eyes and just about made me have a seizure

The dope-ist thing about this bike is that those are scratch'n'sniff stickers . . . .

. . . . smells like 4th gen EPO

Do you think the same thing about the Art Cars?

http://www.usautoparts.net/bmw/artcars/

Personally I find the adding of an artists finish to an object kind of odd in an interesting way. It generally makes me smile or think or scratch my head.

The art car seems just a strange in concept, however all the surface area of a car makes a much better canvas than the small tubes of a bike.

. . . but it's superb marketing. Everybody wins. Lance gets all kinds of cool looking (or not) bikes and gets the PR for Livestrong from all the coverage. Trek gets huge PR coverage. LAF gets the profits from selling them to "collectors." The artists--I presume--get huge tax write-offs from their "donations."

'The technical problems were immense, as I wanted to use real butterflies and not just pictures of butterflies, because I wanted it to shimmer when the light catches it like only real butterflies do, and we were trying not to add any extra weight to the bike."

That's pretty funny (or disgusting): like iridescently colored plastic is an "immense technical problem" or actually so heavy as to be a problem for Lance. Lazy, pompous, indifferent artists should not attract collectors.

have one of my frames repainted, in a mud splatter and dusty-dirt design.

Think of the time I'll save.

Kevan,

Don't forget the gentle rusting at the lug or weld joints! It makes it look like you are constantly on the bike, and have taste enough to keep that classic frame.

Wow. I just bought The Dangerous World of Butterflies (http://www.globepequot.com/globepequot/index.cfm?fuseaction=customer.product&product_code=1-59921-555-1&category_code=). I wonder if the book is going to need a postscript.

I'm surprised it took so long. Does Lance ever race in the UK? Get ready for some animal rights activist to throw them selves in front of his bike or some such thing.

I find it distasteful, but I find myself owning more than one bicycle component made of dead cow.

For whatever reason, it feels different.

I'm a dead cow skin fan myself. But for gloves I prefer baby goats.
