Old guy on a Serotta
I test-rode our Serotta HSG bike the other day, and realized that, although its brand new, it felt really familiar. Even though it has nothing in common with them but heritage, this bike feels like the old-school American criterium frames of the 70s and 80s. One of my friends had a plain red Eisentraut about 1980 which rode just like this 2009 carbon bike stiff, quick, and lively. Liberty Bikes sold a few Melton frames that had that same quality, as though the bike from saddle to tire-patch and handlebar to derailleur was all one piece. Ben Serotta was building frames at that time, just like some of the greats like Albert Eisentraut and Dave Moulton, so it must have been something in the air.
