My friend who bought my old Ti Serotta would like to put a new compact crank on in place of the 8-speed alloy Record crank. Will this work with the rest of the 8-speed Record group (chain, shifters, F & RD, 13-26 cassette)?

It's kind of a shame because it's a full Record alloy group with a full SRP bolt kit and no road rash. Oh well.

Thanks.

I changed out the crank on my CSI with Record 8-speed but I don't think your standard compact crank will work--I ordered a TA Alize or something from Peter White Cycles with "custom" sized chainrings, I think 48/36. The rest of my set up is still Record 8-speed. Everything works fine, better gearing for me now that I am no longer a youngster.

Gearing is why he wants the compact. Anyone else care to chime in? Surely someone has tried this with great success... Or heartbreaking failure.

Have a look at this compact crank, they claim it works with with 8sp chains:

Couldn't you use an old school 110mm crank? Like an old XT or XTR or Ritchey (that'd be nice)

I may be wrong, but I thought I'd toss that out there.

Can't you run a Campagnolo 9 speed compact? Campag used to recommend them as replacement for 8 speed parts after those went out of production.
