Need help dating an old Nova Special

Hi,
I have an older Nova Special. Serial number 90639. Columbus SL tubing. White with Pink lettering outlined in teal. I need to know the date so I can build it up with circa correct parts. Thanks, Joe.

The Nova Special was Serotta's ' 'basic model' (their words) and made during the mid to late '80s. I don't believe Serotta has any records dating back that far, so it would be extremely difficult to pin an exact year to it. The Nova Special is shown in my 85 Serotta catalog.

I just checked mine which was (believe) built in 1991. The serial number is SN5800994. I think it means -
S Serotta, or Special
N Nova
58 58 cm
00994 994th one

I have a frame built by Serotta in Feb 1989 with serial# 90324, so my guess is your NHX is also from 1989. I think Serotta changed their serial numbering scheme soon afterward to the one that is currently used.

That is a great reply. I was not aware of an early or later serial numbering system, although it appears that the later frames had letters as well as numbers and the earlier just numbers. Keep it coming. Thanks, Joe.

was built in 1983 or 1984. By about 1986 I was racing a new Club Special. Both bikes were built up with Campy Super Record, so that would be a good choice to use as components if you can find a group.

I loved those bikes, my Nova Special was painted a beautiful African Violet with yellow graphics. It was really striking and a super road racer. Unfortunately, it died in a massive pile up. I'm rrying to find a pic of it here, if I do I'll post it

The Colorado that I just sold is serial #90205 and, according to Serotta Russ, was sold to the dealer in Jan of 89, so the 89 date that you have lines up nicely with that.
