I agree, I really like BELGIAN PILS but really have not had much exposure to anything else. I don’t know which Chimay I tried, but it has way too strong a medicine taste for me – are all the Chimay beers ABBEY/TRAPPIST ALE’s? I guess the usually type I drink is a pale ale. I had a very pale recently from Steelhead that was out of this world. Here is my place:

was in brussels and bruges two years ago, was drunk every night, and am not a beer freak or anything. but it was so good I tried all I could for the four days total, and here's my tally:

Chimay: trappist ales, come in tripple, dubble, and singel. my spelling is all f'd up but you can figure it out. tripple comes out to be like 9 % alcohol. Very dark and strong...i liked it but my girlfriend didn't! you can get it at trader joe's

Westmalle: another trappist ale that comes in three strengths

Duvel: yet more, seen it at yuppie supermarkets

Hoegaarden: bierre blanc...FANTASTIC...if you like Hefeweizen, you'll love this stuff..perfect for summer and comes in its own big-gulp size glass at bars.

Actually, every beer has its own glass with the name on the side..

Then there are various "blonde" beers that are nice, but not as distinctive.

Fruity or sweet (lambic) beers:

Kriek: comes in peach, raspberry, and others. Very refreshing!

Faro: not as fruity but better than kriek imho.

stella artois: the budweiser of belgium, didn't bother with it

I'm sure i'm missing some more. Too bad I didn't know back then that I'd want to go visit Eddy Merckx and order a 7-11 Corsa Extra...

Oh, did I mention beer is cheaper than bottled water there? :)

btw, the webpage in the first post gets flagged by work as some kind of porn site, so I wasn't able to view it..:(

cheers, skol!

I'll second westmalle, their tripple is the best, and the Hoegaarden is great after a ride. If I wan't to make my self really confused though I'll suck down a Pirate or a Gulden Draak..I live next to a Beer emporium that specializes in Belgian beer, which is a blessing and a curse!

kriek by definition means it is flavored by the Schaerbeek cherry. now there are many belgian flavored beers but kriek is cherry and a very partiicular cherry at that. now iit is an ungodly vile medicinally sweet beer you couldn't force the jerk to drink if he had to bang naughty bits with roseanne barr....however strangely enough there exists a certain breed of flemish man who can just put back a dozen or more of this horseshiiit in one sitting. some of the guys the jerk raced with were kriekaholics. i never understood how anything so ungodly sweet could be consumed in quantities approaching the hog's head. anyway, as you were.
