One of the cyclists in the story below is part of our local riding group. The route he was taking is one that several groups in the area use. In fact we had two groups go out just before he went out solo for what was to be a century.

Apparently, two kids in a car (drunk) were looking for cyclists to hit. They even switched drivers so that each of them would have a turn hitting cyclists.

Fortuantely, while the cyclists were injured, nothing was broken - still.... The good news is that they got the guys who did it - and are charging them the way they should. Given their age, the felonies should do a nice number on them.

Two men were injured early Sunday morning after being knocked off their bikes by a car in Brookfield.

Brookfield police have charged Erik Fabian, 19, and Armando Reza, Jr., 17, both of Chicago, with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery on a public way, as well as failure to stop after an accident involving personal injury, all felonies.

In addition, Reza was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI. His blood alcohol level was allegedly .158, which is two times the legal limit, two hours after the two separate incidents.

The two men had a bond hearing Tuesday at the Maybrook courthouse. They are scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 9 a.m.

The first victim, a 51-year-old Oak Park resident, was riding westbound in the curb lane of the 9200 block of Washington Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. when he heard a vehicle approach from behind.

He moved over close to the curb, but the vehicle reportedly accelerated and struck his rear tire. The man was thrown from his bike, landing on the street and skidding some 10 feet. He was able to get a partial plate off the white Chevy Monte Carlo before the car turned fled north.

The cyclist was able to make it to a nearby house and phone police.

At 6:45 a.m., Brookfield police monitored a call from LaGrange Park regarding a 33-year-old Brookfield man who was allegedly sideswiped by a white vehicle at the intersection of 31st Street and Maple Avenue.

LaGrange Park police reported officer spotted a white car with two men matching the description pull into a gas station.

A friend of the Oak Park man said he was lucky to have not been hurt worse. The victim remains in a lot of pain due to the road rash, a friend said in an e-mail. The victim was treated at Loyola Medical Center and released. The second victim refused medical attention at the scene, according to police.

I tend to be pretty open-minded toward the rehabilitation of youthful offenders. Not this time. These two obviously have zero regard for other human beings. Throw 'em in the hole for life. Let them learn a new definition of "boyfriend."

I am just glad they have been charged correctly. Now lets wait and watch the progress of the case through the criminal justice system.

What I noticed about the story is it occurred at 6:30 a.m. in the morning.

Wonder if they had been out all night drinking, and just decided to go for a joy ride on the way home from wherever they had been partying, and someone decided to start knocking off cyclists.
