I have a CRL which I'm going to build up as a sort of fast city bike. It's in great shape but it's nightmarish getting a 27.2 post into the damned thing. Am I unaware that it takes the rare 27.1 post? :) Does anyone have any good tricks?

Take a digital caliper to your LBS, find a undersized seatpost.
Or maybe your "27.2" is a bit large ??

Sometimes poor quality control is your friend.

I bought a early 90's lugged steel specialized allez that was the same way.

I took it to Vecchio's in Boulder, and, in addition to facing the headtube and bb, they made the inside of the seat tube more round*. New Kalloy seapost goes in easy peasy now.

All CSi's used a 27.2.

You might try a different brand or two of posts. As odd as it might sound a 27.2 post isn't supposed to be 27.2 in diameter. A 27.2 post is the size that should fit into a true 27.2 I.D. seat tube. In fact no one can really agree what size a "27.2" post should be but MOST are about 27.15. They can vary by brand a good bit.

Campy tend to be bigger and shimano smaller and all the lil' brands are who knows what.

I have a set of calipers you can borrow if you want to measure seatpost diams.

The default skinny post at 27.2 that Serotta designs around now is a Thomson brand try that one first. My Nitto 27.2 are always tight even on my new Bedford.

Thanks everyone. It is a Nitto. I'll try a Thomson.

Last week it was shorter cranks, this week it's smaller seatposts... I'll be over after work on Sunday, I'll bring a seatpost or two, a digital calipers, a big hammer and a sawzall - that should just about do it.
