Hey all-- I recently bought a nice IF Crown Jewel F/F/HS with a 1 inch steer tube. The handlebar I want to use is a 31.8, and all of my existing stems are 1 1/8 steer tube.

So....Does anyone know if there is either a shim available to adapt a 1 1/8 stem to a 1 inch steer tube; or can you recommend a decent stem in the 1 inch / 31.8 configuration (Thomson doesn't do one and a quick web search didn't bear fruit)?

OBTW-- If someone has such a stem in 100 or 110mm that they want to sell, I'm your guy!

Thanks! Chris

There are a few folks that make a shim to downsize the 1 1/8" stem to a 1" fork. Any good bike shop should have some. They are silly simple and cheap.

I stock them if you can't find one at your LBS.

As Dave said, Thomson makes them (they usually cost around $5-6). Also, some companies include shims with their stems, like Ritchey, so an LBS might have extras and could just give you one. IIRC, the Thomson stem comes with pretty specific installation instructions (gap should face front; use 1" spacers underneath; use 1-1/8" top cap, etc.).

IIRC All Thomson stems are 1 1/8, and the shim is an extra few dollars. It fits perfectly. I am using one on my thomson on a 1" fork. I'm pretty sure that you can get them in 31.8 and 26.0 in most models.

1+ on the above.

The older 1" stems are now hard to find and likely all are for 26 mm bars. The shim is definitely the way to go.

Thanks! I'll get with my LBS tomorrow. Funny, Thomson doesn't list them on their site.

I think that the only mention on the website is in the FAQs (see the 12th entry):

Thanks a million, all, for the advice. I'll have a chat with my "guy" this morning, and if he doesn't stock the shim, will take up Dave or Paul on their kind offer.

Cheers, Chris

Took care of it locally. A much more common condition than I realized. Thanks, all for the advice!
