Bad fit might be an issue here, no?

my guess is that it is in the midst of assembly and the post is out that far to be clamped in the work stand.

Excellent guess. No chain, you couldn't really ride it. I tried riding a bike with no chain once, it too was in the midst of a build. It's a really weird feeling.

I rode my commuter without a chain last friday until I could stop. I then walked back and picked the chain up off the road. I then called for a ride home. I guess I was too pissed to feel weird about it.

pretty bike, but cut that seat post, and take the kinks out of those bars. I don't need no stinkin chain.

It's a good thing there is no chain. Otherwise, some idiot might try to go out and ride it and get hurt when he needs to stop since there aren't any brake cables either. :)

Just lower the saddle so not as much seatpost is exposed and the bike will look great, as some have indicated. the drop from saddle to handlebar is gigantic.

For some reason I really like the paint scheme. I've never seen one like it before.

That is one of the really cool thinks about a custom company like Serotta or even the small builders. Tons of different looks strictly due to pant jobs.

Makes me wonder if Sachs ever gets tired of having all his bikes painted the same?

I saw that bike on eBay too. Sure caught my eye. And yes, it was a build project that wasn't complete. I am sure the guy didn't cut the post until he completed the other work. BTW, it appeared to be a nice, nearly complete build if someone is looking for a 'deal'.
