Following the Dr. Doofus idea I started negotiating for my 40th Birthday custom ride. I feared being berated by the crowd like he was so I went for the gusto and got a $9000 budget.

So here is the plan.

Serotta Ottrott St for $5295
painted F1 fork $685
A nice CAMPAGNOLO Hyperion Ultra Clincher Wheelset $2875

With a running total of $8855 it leaves me $145 for one of those Killer Shimano Alivio Build Kits.

when you spring that idea on her do it over a nice Steak and NOT Ethiopian food . You may or may not still get screwed . Good luck I think a nice motorcycle would be cheaper , or in Sandys world a Tuna fish sandwich

This frame/fork/wheelset combo needs a retro Tourney setup. :D

And make that an Ethiopian Hound steak....the better cuts have black paws :D

Well, at least you only have 8 months to wait for your new bike.

Smiley, it's funny that you make the motorcycle comment the day after I bought one. 2001 Suzuki TL1000R...basically brand new. Picked it up for a very respectable $4k. As I was driving behind my bud who was riding it home for me I thought to myself, I can't believe I can buy a motorcycle with well over 100HP for WAY less than many bicycles. I love bikes, both with and without motors...just seems that you can get a lot more for your money when you buy the kind with a motor.

the irony fo those economics also occur to me regularly. At least we don't have to pay to register our bicycles in San Diego. I read an amusing article pointing out that it's cheaper to fuel a motorcycle with gas than a bicycle with food. While tongue-in-cheek it actually seemed to add up on a calories/BTU watts of power basis. Don't ask me for specifics--I only read it once and I'm old and forgetful.

Ken, going further... I heard that a case where food as fuel (tax deductable)for a Canadian foot courier was successfuly argued however US bicycle couriers are not successful with similar pleas to the US Gov't. It really is nonsense non? If a motorcycle courier can deduct gas expense why not an allowance for the bicycle courier. 'Course we'd have to weight these cats and require yearly testing to set their tarif rate ;) Arr arr.

Much cheaper to get a set of wheels from Jeremy Parfitt (Alchemy Bicycle Works) while saving weight as well. His custom build wheels typically weigh between 1200 and 1340 grams and cost around $650, while a set of Hyperons weigh 1350 grams and cost $2875.

If you really want those carbon wheels, you can get them from Maestro UK for around $2400. Call Mike for an accurate quote.

save $2,000 with a Legend. save more with Hyperion tubulars. That should give you a record gruppo.
