i still get bars when watching blu ray discs. the black bars are along the top and bottom.
i'm running 1080p with ps3.
however, when watching special features such as 'the making of' or interviews on the same disc, it fills out the widescreen just fine with no bars.
anyone know why?

yeah I had this issue too. I did some online research and found out that there are different wide screen standards. some bluray's are one standard, others another. drove me nuts.

Movies are filmed with different aspect ratios. It's only a guess on my part, but I'd expect maybe the interviews are filmed in HDTV 16:9 when the original film could have been done in 1.85:1 or 2.39:1.

Many films are still shot in the letterbox format, or 2.35:1. This is wider than a 16:9 widescreen display which is 1.78:1.

You always have the option to zoom in using your TV's display format to fill in the entire screen, but then you are losing some of the image and altering what the director had intended for you to see.
