Is the Thule T2 pretty much the gold standard for hitch mounted racks?

REI is has a "20% off any item" coupon and I am thinking of getting a rack.

Thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Don't know about thule, but I have a saris ride on that has been great for about 5 years. I hear the newer ones are even better because they are apparently much lighter. Check em out.

I got a Hollywood rack which saw quite a bit of use last summer and did not disappoint in any way.

Have used many racks, on many different cars (roof and trailer hitch)--I am very happy with the T2. In fact, have a 2 bike and 4 bike version in the garage for use with the different cars (hitch sizes etc). Works great.

I used my last 20% REI coupon for the same rack. I couldn't find it for cheaper than that. Considering REI's warranty, it's the way to go.

REI is offering 20% off a full priced item right now. Coupon code "MEMSAVE". I just used that coupon with my dividends they gave me and got a nice Twinsix jersey and Shirt for $22 shipped to my door.

I'm very happy with my T2. Depending on your vehicle, you may need to fiddle with the location of the racks so you can ensure adequate clearance to be able to take advantage of the fold-up feature. Here are some pics of his and hers MTBs and the T2 on my Subaru Outback. I recently picked up the T2 Add-On and can now carry up to four bikes off the back of the car. Makes it pretty long so you need to take a little extra caution, especially when backing up. You'll need to have a 2" receiver hitch if you want to have this option. Depending on your hitch, you may also lose a little bit of ground clearance (departure angle) as you can see from one of the pics.

I don't keep mine on the car full-time because I don't like to constantly lower and raise the hitch when I want to access my hatch. It only takes a couple of minutes to install and remove anyway. I also have a roof rack with a couple of fork-mounted racks that I keep on the vehicle full-time.

I really like the T2 for MTBs since they're heavier and more cumbersome to put on the roof. Plus, with my kids' bikes which don't have QR skewers, it's nice to be able to throw the whole bike on without fooling with the front wheel.

Do they offer extensions for tandems, or longer bikes like recumbents?

Yup. $5 shipping now, too. I used mine yesterday to order (well, says backorder) a new Lezyne Floor pump (http://www.rei.com/product/786546)

The chuck threads to the valve.

Thule T2 is best for 2 bikes. However if you need 4 bikes capacity, then it can get very tall when you fold it up even when not in use.

I needed 4 bikes capacity, and eventually went with Thule Roadway 5. I took off a set of carrier, so I can fit 4 on it easily. Also bought the ski rack attachment, and was great for trip to the snows.

Bought a Yakima by habit, cause I always had Yak roof racks. Been lusting for the Thule since. Yak's ok, but the quality of the Thule is superior.
