Is that "quick link" that comes with the 7900 chain reliable? Looks like it could come apart under the right circumstances. I'm torn between using it and just a solid pin. Thanks, Jeff N.

I am running the link on all of my 10 sp. shimano bikes and have it on all 12 of the team bikes (Giant TCR) that I wrench for. Zero problems so far. I find it much easier to deal with than a power link for install/removal. pdx

Is the quicklink backwards compatible with the 7800 / 6600 line of chains?

Can it be purchased as a stand alone item? If so, where?

Thanks!

Steve

The quicklink is compatible with all shimano 10sp chains. It is supposed to be available for sale as a separate item but, as with all things 7900/7970, delivery has been delayed... and delayed... and delayed some more!

Jeff I have been using the 7900 link for a month and have had no problem. I did have to tweak the fixed pin to make it long enough on the first time installation. Ride safely. JohnnyG

are the 7800 and 7900 cassettes the same, or at least compatible? meaning, if you put 7900 on one bike, could you swap in wheels that have older DA 10-speed cassettes? thanks!

The current wipperman connex link will fit perfectly and it's easy to install. It is a directional link, so follow the instructions. The slotted end oh the plate facing the right side, on the lower section of chain points to the back of the bike.

I have mixed and matched 7800 and 7900 cassettes and chains with each other, and they all work fine together. In fact, it is my impression so far that the 7801 chain is a good bit quieter than the new 7900 chain. I am wondering if the hollowed out links contribute to greater noise. It's supposed to be quieter, but my anecdotal data indicates otherwise.

Climb, I am using the 7800 cassettes with good performance for a month now. Ride Safely. JohnnyG

So, is there someplace in the US that has the 7900 quick links? I just put one on with the CXII I just built up and was thinking about carrying a spare... My LBS says the quick links only come with the chains for now? (I'm in Canada)

Do a google search and you will see tons of chains with links for sale and various forums with some saying it has been having problems and to go back to using break off pin.

Shimano has temporaily discontinued the quick link. The quick link was wearing faster than the chain...causing problems. Shimano told me they did not know when the revised link would be out.
