The problem with the President continuing to speak about things he doesn't understand is that more and more people begin to understand that he doesn't.

The good news is I just heard from Robert Gates that my salary qualifies me as rich. And further anybody making this salary has no doubt grown rich because of the Bush tax cuts. And here I was thinking that giving 40% or so of my income back to the Federal and State government, paying the max into a social security system unlikely to give me anything meaningful in return, not qualifying for Roth IRA's or pretty much any other program the government uses my money to offer other "tax payers" was pretty damn generous.

I know. It's ALL his fault.

In light of the recent, um, controversial threads that almost got people banned, isn't this just baiting, trolling, chumming the waters? A legitimate thread on the economy or market, fine, but this just seems like provocation to me, and asking for trouble. One reason why I never read or even post in the political threads.

Don't forget sales tax, excise tax, fuel tax, etc.

agreed. but public condemnation is not a bad thing either, especially given that there has been much discussion of late regarding decorum and that, moreover, the thread was not begun by a neophyte who might pretend ignorance. that's the last I'll say.

on the economy, the stock market drops. How much will the market drop this time?Futures are up this morning even though he is scheduled to speak. That's a good sign.

Yesterday they were also up in the AM as I recall, but the markets turned quickly on bad news. I honestly don't know if the problem is that the American people think there is no real answer to the problems and that we must endure the pain for a while, or if they lack confidence in the administration to solve the many problems he inherited without taking us closer and closer to socialism. That's the part that scares me most because every move this administration has made seems to favor that direction as a means to solve problems.

As I’ve stated for over a year, IMO the problems we have are mostly due to unintended consequences of government policies that go back for decades. I don’t blame either Bush or Obama for most of these problems because they are all connected. However, IMO the unintended consequences of socialistic programs got us in this mess, and we are just making things worse every single day by returning to that well. I think that’s what markets are fearing.

Yes, I know its all Franklin Delano ROOOsevelts fault.

During FDRs reign the tax form fit on a postcard, with tables on the back.
Now we have 17,000 pages of socialist command driven economic meddling.

The US had fine big economic collapses before FDR, the finance boys allways
outthink themselves eventually, 30 to 1 leverage is just as bad as everyone
buying on margin before the '29 crash

You might want to read any one of the negative Pres. Bush/Republican threads from the last 5-6 years and wonder why there is a double standard. I'll dig up a few and see how you posted in those.

This is legit. Everytime the new President speaks on the economy, the stock market dives. Facts are ok, right?

Yup, you're right on this. All his fault.

I wonder, to what should we attribute all the declines before he was elected?

a gross oversimplification.
yes, guilty as charged, and of course my statement was intentionally (but not mean-spiritied) rhetorical fireworks; it should not have been implied that I was drawing that kind of conclusion from your post, and I apologize for the over-simplification. It is sadly true, however, that this is the attitude around here. There is plenty of open space available in and around the city to re-develop, even though there is no housing shortage by any stretch of the imagination (just not as much money to be made from it). There simply is no population pressure here and in many places that are experiencing sprawl, and if anything there is even retraction-loss of population, but development of farm land continues. I'm just a bit sensitive to the issue of sprawl living here in the old rust belt, and maybe even more sensitive to scape-goating illegal immigration as the evil other and cause of this country's woes. sorry BBD.

I can see no other purpose to this thread other than to get the usual reactions from the usual folks. You all have each others ID's . . . continue this useless, endless partisan argument offline. Thank you.
