I recently bought a set of Dura Ace derailleur cables and housing. It came with regular ferrules and end caps. But, there is a single ferrule (left in photo) that is a mystery - how/where is it used?

Always wondered that myself..And I have built (and rebuilt) over 30 road bikes...

Guess its not really needed as none of the bikes have fallen apart as yet.

Just sayin'

Some chainstay stops require a nippled ferrule.

Is it the one used for the RD on the chain stay? Smaller on one end then the other.
Many newer frames don't need it.

Some "classic Italian frames" have a different type of stop for the rear derailleur on the chainstay. My Merckx MXL used that type of ferrule.

You'll want a few of those laying around when working on older bikes.

Now I'm feeling old. Back when bikes had 5 or 6 gears and index shifting was called positron and only came on department store bikes, the good bikes use Nuovo Record derailleurs which came with a length of bare, spiral wound housing and a ferrule to fit that cable stop. That cable stop was a standard until Shimano introduced their New Dura-Ace group with indexing. The way you shifted with non-indexed down tube shifters was to overshift and correct - most riders could do this in their sleep. Indexing meant that the compression of the housing had to go, so less than a year after New Dura-Ace came out, linear strand cable followed and cables changed.
