97CSI has a wonderful thread- "Where Was Your Bike Made" It was pointed out that 95% of the bikes made that are sold in the United States are made in China or Taiwan. I was wondering how many of us own bikes ONLY made in the USA.

I own two bikes, both made in the USA.

2008 Serotta Coeur D'Acier
2004 Serotta Ottrott St

So who else owns bikes all of which are made in the USA? What are they?

Made in the USA,

I have a Chris Kvale, but it has Italian, French,Japanese parts and Italian tubes.

I also have a Bates, British bike, with British tubes, derailer, bars, saddle, brakes, stem and hubs.
It does have a French chainset, Japanese tires on Australian (Commonwealth) rims.

So my Bates is the most patriotic bike by jingo, Rule Britannia.

My bikes are both Serotta's....2003 CSI and a 2004 Legend Ti....and made in the USA.

I think my wife's Electra Townie and my son's Novarra BMX bike are both made in China.

Seems to me my Mcmahon frame is USA built, but I think the Sakai aluminum forks are from over yonder.

My IF Crown Jewel is certainly USA fabbed, but I don't where Reynolds has their fab for cranking out the omnipresent Ouzo pro.

I haven't a clue where my older Felt F1 Scandium was welded up, probably China or Taiwan.

My (really my son's) Answer Felt F1 was built here though.

"All built in the USA"---I'm not sure how far to go with that. What about tubing and components? If it's carbon did the fibers and stuff all originate in the USA? I know USA produces ti tubing but I don't know where the ti is found. I think a lot of steel comes from Italy. I don't have any bikes with a USA Schwinn gruppo. :)

Currently my Waterford.
Recently two Serottas (CIII and a Nova), two Cannondales, a Softride, a Dean, a Schwinn Paramount, a Seven, and a Spectrum.

But, I also had a Pegoretti (MUST get another one of those) and a Bridgestone.

Next up? Not sure, although a Hampsten is my latest thought. Or perhaps that new Taiwanese Rivendell.

Serrota Legend Ti and Rans Screamer are two I have from the US. I do not think there are any components manufactured in the US. Probably no handle bars, stems, pedals, seat posts, saddles, or tires are made in the US. It would it seem that US made is limited to frame fabrication and final assembly.

Frame and fork yes, but not the bike. As part of the cost, I'd say maybe 50:50 made in USA versus everything else foreign; mostly the components.

Well...it looks like three out of four current bikes with one USA incoming:

Current:
'96 CSI - US
'08 Kirk Terraplane - US
8? Coppi Steel - Italy
Trek 970 Stumpjumper - US - it's really old and decrpit, and only gets ridden in the snow.

The components are from all over the world - Japan (probably China too), Italy, France, US, Switzerland, and who knows where the tubes for the US bikes came from.

Incoming:
Richard Sachs - sometime in 2013 or 2014? - US, but I don't know where the tubes will come from.

Cheers!

Five of 'em have US-made framesets:

Kelly Knobby-X
Kelly Bone Stock
Richard Sachs road
Cannondale CAAD3

There are a few American parts (Salsa, Paul, Ritchey) tossed in here and there as well (with some of those parts on non-US framesets).

is there honestly in difference between a handmade bike made in italy by one man and one made in montana by one man and one made in japan by one man? i'm certainly not trying to pick a fight but when it comes to bikes, how does it matter where they're made? in many ways, any bike made in america is built on a culture made in europe.

In my narrow view the frame, no matter where built, is a reflection of the builder - just as a painting is the reflection of the artist. If the builder puts that smile on your face - that is all that counts. Some of the japanese. european, and North American (yes CANADA also) are my all time LUST bikes!!!

Although I've a couple made in the usa bicycles (Lemond Poprad, Lemond Sarthe, Trek 520), I would glaidly purchase a frame made in italy, france or anywhere else if I liked it.

The only thing I do not like is italian threaded botom brackets so if I could get an italian frame with an elnglish threaded bottom bracket--that would be great.

Well . . . my road bike frame, cross bike frame, and old road bike frame that's now a fixed gear, were made in upstate NY, but . . . I dunno, I've got US made rims on a couple of wheels, but hubs from Italy, Switzerland, and wherever, and a set of nucleons, and a set of something with Taiwan made rims, mostly campag components, but maybe my spooky carbon cantis were made in the US, tires here, there, and everywhere (Italy, Germany, Thailand, and counting), Italian saddles (I think), stems and bars from wherever.

Couple 'o ti Spectra, both made in the US, in Tennessee I believe. Not sure about the Wound Up fork on one of 'em though - any ideas? The other fork is steel from up the road in the Lehigh Valley.

I've had three Rivs that were US products, but currently have a Rambouillet (Japan) and a Bleriot (Taiwan, I think). My other bike is a Brompton (GB) so the Spec's are the only US bikes at the moment. Have to check on that fork.

I can't think of a single PART on any of my bikes that were made in the US. I'm sure there are a few, maybe some cables or spokes or something? Maybe the King Headsets and Phill BBs.

I apologize if I've been mislead, and I don't mean this to be disparaging in any way -- in fact, it wouldn't/doesn't slow me down one iota from droolingly covetting his excellent frames --but fwiw

isn't the entire rear triangle of a Crumpton an off-the-shelf part from Easton, i.e., a Taiwanese company? Fork too, is my understanding.

If that is in fact true it seems really disingenuous to call a Crumpton "entirely made in the USA"

Again, not that I would give a rat's ass where one of those beauties was made...

Sandy, my best guess is that if we're talking bikes, not frames, and really counting everything from tires to saddles, the count still stands at zero. Heck, I think that even my "old" CSi frame, designed, brazed, and painted, all by hand in Saratoga Springs, NY, probably had pipes that took a ride on a boat before making their way to NY.

I must've gotten that Easton tip from this Pez review:

http://pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=3956

...which admittedly is 3 years old, so perhaps Nick has changed his sources? In fact, checking Crumpton's website now, I see that the rear triangle no longer sports the Easton logo nor even the same weave as the Easton portrayed in that Pez review, so it does look like that's probably out-of-date info.

Mea culpa.

I think that you are correct. I was really talking framesets. Possibly just frames, as different forks, not made by the frame builder, are often chosen. In addition, as you said, the tubing may not even be produced in the US. Probably relatively few bikes that have frame, fork, and tubes that are made in the US, and possibly/probably zero bikes that are totally made in the US.

I was made in the US as stated, but my mother came from Russia, so maybe I don't really count as made in the USA. :)

I was always under the impression that Crumpton uses carbon fiber tubing and forks from Edge, which last I heard is is all made in the US.

actually a reply to bob ross. i've heard that parlee's lower models (z3 and maybe z2) had the "off-the-shelf" rear triangles to save cost and to pass the savings onto the customer. can't recall who/where the rear tri was made but i thought it might be easton. but good catch on that if it is the case!

The cost savings (which don't really exist anymore) were supposed to come from the simpler assembly process. Also from what I've read, the tube layups for the Z1/Z2/Z3 have been spec'ed by Parlee but made by others, originally Reynolds Composites and now Edge. The Z4 is a different animal, it is made offshore.

That's my understanding also.

I'd heard the tubes were fabricated in Utah, which would mean ...um ... Reynolds or Edge. Great.

Note to [happycampyer] what year is your Cinghale pro just curious when Hampsten started using IF as their steel builder?

JohnMy Cinghiale Pro was built last year. From the website, it sounds like they dropped the Pro for a while:

"This is a return to our roots, of a sort. Similar to our first-generation Match-built Cinghiale Pro frames the new version again features lightweight steel tubing, uber-clean TIG-welds and paint, and that quick-yet-stable Hampsten geometry which so many of us know and love."

You must have one of the originals.

I did stop in and showed them my bike. We spent 5 minutes talking, and then I proceeded to buy a Gore Bike Wear shell for Monday's weather. It was a lot of money, but it was recommended (2nd to Assos) and he gave me a discount. Great shop and great products!

I wonder how many owns bikes that are all made in Mexico?

Frank Schleck is probably wondering how many owns bikes that are all make in Luxembourg.

This reminds me of the time my little sister came home crying because the school bully (Buddy Hinton) picked on her because she was riding a pink Schwinn. “Baby Bike! Baby Bike! S-s-s-chwinns are stupid American bikes for little girls who lisp. Get a Colnago!”. I rode up next to him and tried to ask him to stop but he laughed and hooked my front wheel. I went down in a heap and I could hear him laughing and yelling, “Sissy on a cheap American bike!!!”. In response my Dad worked with me to be able to throw elbows in a sprint and I had to work it over and over again with my big brother. Anyway, the following Monday I noticed I had a crowd following me around the school, come to find out my little sister “Kinda told” everyone I was going to elbow Buddy into the gutter. Well, we’re riding home and all of a sudden Buddy comes sprinting by on his multi-colored Colnago and attempts to hook my little sister’s front while yelling “baby Bike! Baby Bike!...”. I sprinted up next to him…,

“Hey Buddy, why don’t you just leave her alone?”

“Why, you like Sissy bikes? Baby bike baby…”

“Cut it out Buddy…”

…y bike! Baby Bike! Why don’t you go to the back of the peloton on your cheap American bike You Sissy!!”

At which point he dropped his head and tried to shoulder me back into the group that had been following us. I just closed my eyes and threw an elbow and the next thing I know I hear a crash. I open my eyes and hit the brakes, and there’s Buddy on the ground at the curb with his Colnago at his feet. The frame had been scratched up pretty good and you could see bright Pink showing through. Buddy sees it and starts crying, “My bike ith Pinkth!!!”. I yelled, “Hey Buddy! I’m sorry, are you OK?” The group of kids that had been following us had stopped around us and my little sister started chanting “Baby Bike, baby Bike, look at that cheap pink paint job!!” The rest of the group joined in and Buddy got up, grabbed his bike and ran off humiliated. The group was laughing but I had to tell them to knock it off. It wasn’t nice to do, not even to Buddy Hinton.

A couple of days later my Dad told me that Buddy had stopped by the house to ask if he could barrow my little sister’s paint kit to touch up his Colnago. He also apologized and said I had a wicked left elbow.

(CHIPs ending)

Well, if it's not expected that all the parts are US, then...

Serotta Fierte ti (travel bike with S&S; Hed bastogne wheels- I think these are made in MN)
Serotta steel - not sure of the model anymore, also a travel bike with couplers
Gunnar Crosshairs- Wisconsin
Aegis Aro Svelte carbon- Made in Maine!

Traveling in Europe on a US bike is good ambassadorial policy. Plus, the Serottas are inherently great fun to ride.

We still have a few real oldtimers kicking around.... a Windsor (Mexico), an AustroDaimler (Austria, all Campy), and a wild pastiche of stuff on an Allegro touring bike (Swiss, 531, nice lugs, French threads) with Stronglight crank and headset, huret derailleur, SR stem, Zeus seatpost, Wienman front brake and levers, DuraAce rear brake and front derailleur, Guidons Philippe handlebars, Campy hubs and rims and pedals. It has an early JimBlacburn rack as its only US component though. I don't quite know how many countries that really is on one bike.

Mtb: Merlin Hardtail
Fixed: Gunnar Street Dog
Commuter: Ibis Hakkalugi

I've got a 56 Atlantis for touring, but have plans some point in the next few years for trying to swap that frame and wheels for something that takes 700's but is kinda similar, and I would kinda like to go with something more local if possible.

Also, the fixed will be replaced by an Aussie Hoffy track bike once I get it painted, but it had it's BB lug replaced by Mikkelsen so it will be dual-citizenship as far as I am concerned :)

Has three Serotta's, and Argonaut, and sometime this this year a Zanc.

I believe when last I looked at a really "american" bike:

1. Frame and fork
2. white for BB and hubs
3. SRAM where you wish
4. Thompson for stem and post
5. King or Cane Creek for headsets
5. etc.

I was stuck on rims and tires where rims were affordable clinchers, and not $1000 carbon.

I looked more for a project than for any objection to high quality foreign goods, but liked the idea of an all west coast build...

I currently ride five bikes built in the USA - Parlee Z3, Seven Axiom Race, Seven Mudhoney, Cannondale Caad9 and Dead Colonel hardtail - with one notable exception an 80's Greg Lemond frame made by Bilatto of Italy. All are great rides in their own right and each highlights the strengths of the builder.

My other frame is an aluminum frame welded by an American now living in China and doing AL frames for Carver Bikes. Semi-American then? ;)

Canadian that owns the following bikes made in the USA: Moots Vamoots, Indyfab Crown Jewel, Three Serottas (Ti Legend St, 1st gen Classique, Steel Colorado III Cross), Dean Ti, Lemond Maillot Juane. My only Canadian bike is a Marinoni Pumia (awesome frame for the money). Only European bike that interests me is a Big Leg Emma. American craftsmanship and excellence in framebuilding continues to amaze me (so many great builders). I love all three of my Serottas and ride the heck out of the cross frame. I haven't built the Psychlo-X but to make it all-American:
Velocity rims on White Industries hubs (ENO to turn it into SS). Paul crank, King BB and headset, Thomson stem and seatpost. Who makes quality non-expensive American bars i.e. not CF or titanium? And is there an American made saddle? Also, I could put Paul brakes, Gore cables and some nice American-made platform pedal.

'00 Schwinn Homegrown Factory- although the decals say USA, I'm skeptical. This used to me one of a few Paramount RS-80's in existence until I broke the frame and my elbow trials riding :(

so all of mine are made in North America and all but one in the USA. Here they are:

1 Schwinn Paramount made in Waterford
2. Eddie Merckx titanium made by Litespeed in Tennessee
3. Trek 5500 made in Wisconsin
4. 84 Serotta Nova Special made in NY

and the Canadian made is a Guru New Steel.

Back in the 80s if you said I'd have five bikes, all made in North America I would have figured that you were crazy.

I have 4 bikes (2 road and 2 track) made by Peter Dreesens (Pottswotn, PA).

My first real racing bike when I was 13 back in 1988 was a 1988 Cannondale Criterium. I then had a 1990 Cannondale 3.0 until 1999. After that I had Colnago, Merckx, Bianchi (all euro made). In 2008 I had Peter make me my current bikes.

Cool Ari!

IIRC we're (semi) local. Wanna ride? What style this weekend?
