yep, I had low expectations for the boss but was riveted by the show. I especially liked the acknowledgement that they had 12 minutes to rock us.

The boss looks like he's been eating well lately but, he's lost nothing in his singing and performing act. Nicely done.

Bunch of "fans" & "young uns" on the field for halftime who've never heard of Springteen acting like he's their fave. The NFL needs to get a clue and get somebody who's actually relevant.

The Boss still rocks. I liked the extemporizing on Glory Days and banter with Little Steve. He'll be in MPLS in May and I'm there. Tramps like me are still running . . .

Bruce's relevance is kind've huge right now.

Never been much of a Boss fan. Kinda like Jackson Browne. You know, ....can listen to him, but I ain't gonna go out and buy a boxed set. And I went to HS with Browne. PS: Steelers got lucky. DAMMMM lucky. Jeff N.

Completely serious. He sold out to Wal-Mart. Absolutely of no relevance.

i would say it would be very hard to top U2s performance. but he was pretty good. as far as who they could get cant really think of anyone other than the who and the stones as far as legendary bands. ramones would have been fun. clash would have been great johnny cash would have been great also. who do you think

FWIW, he admitted the wal-mart deal was a mistake. given his history, i'm inclined to cut him some slack.

I love Bruce, but except for Glory Days, I thought he was pretty flat - playing it safe for the cameras I think. If I hadn't seen him tear the roof off of a concert a little over a year ago I'd think he was getting old, but I know better (oh yeah, and seeing him captivate a crowd of 50,000 plus with just an acoustic guitar at a voter registration event on the Parkway in Philly a few months ago).

Last night, I thought he was barely singing on 10th Avenue and Born to Run was as low energy as I've ever seen, as was the new tune. Glory Days sort of gave a hint of how much fun a Springsteen show can be, but what's the guy gonna do in 12 minutes? There are artists who's primary appeal is hit singles who can do a really good Super Bowl halftime show because they can play a few songs just like the record and everyone goes home happy. Bruce ain't quite the Dead, but he needs a little bit of time to loosen up, stretch out, get to know the crowd, build the energy, etc.

I'm always happy to see someone like him in a big event, but it was miles from his best. Relevance is an irrelevant concept  . If he's relevant to you, he's relevant. He's relevant to me, so that'll do for me.

Maybe Mylie Cyrus was busy?

Relevant to what? I mean, yeah, I get it, Dylan's Forever Young -- which opens with a benediction -- is made into soda marketing and it sticks in the craw, but that bridge was burned long ago. We're talking about musical entertainment at half time at the Super Bowl, with everything staged for the national network broadcast. What exactly are you looking for?

I thought the boss was cool even if his voice was a little bit shot -- kind of impressive to be able to pull off the knee drops pushing 60 too -- but what of it? What are you looking for in pop music half-time entertainment?

I'm a long time Boss fan, but if he feels so bad about the Wal-Mart deal, give the money back or give it away. Don't act so holier than thou about it...like they twisted his arm to take the deal.

Exactly. "Feeling bad" sounds a little hollow to me.
Lots of charities could use some of the bazillion dollars he took in that deal.
He should put his money where his mouth is.

During the show, My wife and I were talking about groups that actually sound good live. Pretty short list. U2 was the only one that I came up with. There is a version of "Bad" from Live-Aid on youtube that blows me away.

It didn't sound like he feels all that terrible or holy about it from the interview I heard. He sort of laughed it off, said he screwed up and didn't think about it enough at the time, and he figures he'll learn from it and probably won't make the same mistake next time - he'll make different mistakes next time. He's a 60 year old guy who's got the world on a string - how upset is he gonna be about something like that?

I thought they were both good, for different reasons.

Now, I have it on good authority that next years halftime show will be George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers.....

Ahh, I can see it now...

Wanna tell you a story,
about the house-rent blues
I come home one Friday,
had to tell the landlady I'd done lost my job
She said that don't comfort me,
long as I get my money next Friday
Now next Friday come I didn't get the rent,
and out the door I went

So I goes to the landlady,
I said, "You let me slide?"
I'll have the rent for you tomorrow.
the next day I don't know
So said let me slide it on you know people,
I notice when I come home in the evening
She ain't got nothing nice to say to me,
but for five year she was so nice
Loh' she was lovy-dovy,
I come home one particular evening
The landlady said, "You got the rent money yet?",
I said, "No! Can't find no job"
Therefore I ain't got no money to pay the rent
She said "I don't believe you're tryin' to find no job"
Said "I seen you today you was standin' on a corner,
leaning up against a post"
I said "But I'm tired, I've been walkin' all day"
She said "That don't confront me,
long as I get my money next Friday"
Now next Friday come I didn't have the rent,
and out the door I went

So I go down the streets,
down to my good friend's house
I said "Look man I'm outdoors you know,
can I stay with you maybe a couple days?"
He said "Uh, Let me go and ask my wife"
He come out of the house,
I could see in his face
I know that was no
He said "I don't know man, ah she kinda funny, you know"
I said "I know, everybody funny, now you funny too"
So I go back home
I tell the landlady I got a job, I'm gonna pay the rent
She said "Yeah?" I said "Oh yeah"
And then she was so nice,
loh' she was lovy-dovy
So I go in my room, pack up my things and I go,
I slip on out the back door and down the streets I go
She a-hollerin' about the front rent, she'll be lucky to get any back rent,
she ain't gonna get none of it
So I stop in the local bar you know people,
I go to the bar, I ring my coat, I call the bartender
Said "Look man, come down here", he got down there
So what you want?

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
Well I ain't seen my baby since I don't know when,
I've been drinking bourbon, whiskey, scotch and gin
Gonna get high man I'm gonna get loose,
need me a triple shot of that juice
Gonna get drunk don't you have no fear
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

But I'm sitting now at the bar,
I'm getting drunk, I'm feelin' mellow
I'm drinkin' bourbon, I'm drinkin' scotch, I'm drinkin' beer
Looked down the bar, here come the bartender
I said "Look man, come down here"
So what you want?

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
No I ain't seen my baby since the night before last,
gotta get a drink man I'm gonna get gassed
Gonna get high man I ain't had enough,
need me a triple shot of that stuff
Gonna get drunk won't you listen right here,
I want one bourbon,-one scotch-and one beer
One bourbon,…one scotch,…one beer

Now by this time I'm plenty high,
you know when your mouth a-getting dry you're plenty high
Looked down the bar I say to my bartender
I said "Look man, come down here", he got down there
So what you want this time?
I said "Look man, a-what time is it?"
He said "The clock on the wall say three o'clock
Last call for alcohol, so what you need?"

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
No I ain't seen my baby since a nigh' and a week,
gotta get drunk man so I can't even speak
Gonna get high man listen to me,
one drink ain't enough Jack you better make it three
I wanna get drunk I'm gonna make it real clear,
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
One bourbon,…one scotch,….one beer

Bruce is not the Minutemen or Fugazi. Check out the book Mansion On The Hill. It tells the story of the business behind Dylan, Bruce et al back when they were really starting to kick their business machines into higher gears.

It is tough to know what to do when mixing art and commerce. Or craft and commerce or what have you. Especially in the music 'business'. Believe me though when I say and have it on good authority that most people you may hold in high regards are not always nice and do not always do what you think is the 'right' thing to do in the business... I know an almost socialist songwriter who buys a new cadillac every few years... and he can be a real jerk too. But he can also do many good things in the world and often does.

People are people.

PS. I think Prince and McCartney were the best I've seen so far at half. Petty was pretty dang good too. All 3 made me want to go see them. That is kind of the point I guess. Shows are ads for records... records are ads for shows... at most levels.

I thought it horrible...

After hearing a couple people that have seen him live semi recently and I've seen him on a few HD broadcasts and knew what was comming though.

It's like he's out of breath after the first syl of each word. Doesn't suprise me that he's making the rounds though as it seems like he's in full sell out mode and doesn't care that people are paying full price for less than half the man.

All due respect for his past. No respect at all for how he's pimping himself out now though.

He has been pimping since way early on. He has just refined his pimp. Everyone does it on some level. I think folks hold these people up too high.

Yeah, Prince killed actually -- one of the few acts to work for the cheap seats and the cameras at the same time, and manage to wind it up in the weird setting (if it matters to Prince) and constrained time on offer.

That was by far the most impressive moment of his 12-minute set...and it occurred what, in the first 10 seconds, right? Downhill from there.

Never understood why Springsteen needs 8-12 musicians onstage just to sound like 2 vacuum cleaners.

Yep. never saw them live, but sure wish I had. I was a big fan. Saw Fugazi on the first tour down in Athens GA with 100 other folks... Very good show. Guy's amp blew up first song. Ian played the whole show with Guy doing some weird rythmic Sain't Vitus Dance and singing...

Me neither. I love alot of his stuff but when I saw him at the Meadowlands, it did sound much like that. Two very very loud vacuum cleaners run through 2 very big leslie cabinets. It was swirly and almost uncomfortable. When I saw him in Chapel Hill, it was better. Might have been since it was outdoors and much less swirl. Still too many people doing the same and playing the same thing on stage.

. . . and in my book there's nobody who can outdo Bono . . . but I really appreciated that Bruce really, sincerely seemed to be having a fun up there.

I also heard a rumor that he refused to do lip syn and also refused to give up a playlist before the show. True?

Bruce did exactly what the people have been asking for over the last few years, and that's a high intensity 12 minute show. That's what they got. The musical aspect wasn't fantastic but he and the rest of the band really enjoyed themselves. As for best halftime show in the last decade that would go to Prince.
