Hey,

At another forum the spam posts have been avoided by implementing a "waiting period" . . . . kind've like buying a gun . . . or a Sachs frame.

Their solution was to make someone wait 30 days before they can sell something on the classifieds and 24 hours before they can post anywhere else.

Those times seem a bit long BUT the place is spam/scam free.

Maybe changing the waiting period form 30 days to 24 hours and 24 hours to 4 hours is a good start.

Dunno how difficult this would be to implement but its just an idea.

Up until Sunday, I had put in a process where I reviewed each email address and ID before allowing someone to post. Unfortunately it started taking over 2 hours/day to do this. One in the morning and One in the Evening (just ask BB Dave)

(YES most NEW ids were spam). Since Sunday it has been the following rules:

- Must list a birthday (believe it or not that catches some)
- Must type in the "letter/number" you see on the screen

YES some of them still get thru....THEY ARE SMART and do this as a job to some extent.

Additionally, I have banned some .com sites for a large number of the ids were coming from them. (gmail.com was a biggie)

I am open to any and all suggestions on how to minimize them even more...

Please let me have them

There's always the Off-Topic subfolder to warehouse potentially non-bicycle content until later review.

Pete -

Thanks for screening. However, some folks may be hesitant to list a birthday as it is potentially a piece of information that can be used for identity theft. Is it possible to use an alternative in some way that still is an effective screener?

as long as they put a date is all that is needed - does not have to be their birth date.

...In fact put a day/month and no year and it makes it easier to isolate the spammers,,,,

Heck, I miss my morning dose of porn spam. :(

Just kidding. Hey, maybe you can make Blue Jays the moderator for a porn spam sub-folder? :D :p ;)

Thanks for working to clean things up Pete.

Pete,

Thanks for staying on top of that stuff.

I think the waiting period might be the way to go.

I like the idea of not allowing URLs to be posted for XX number of days or postings...

I can't say that the Spam bothers me all that much. If it is less work for the moderators to leave the process as is and delete the spam(mers) afterwards, than that should be fine.

Unlike the Mods at another forum, I suspect these guys have a life and should do whatever is easiest on themselves.

and once in awhile the spam is useful. although I am still waiting for my new nike sneakers and that blonde has yet to meet me; she did spend the money I sent her though.

they found another way to get in via IDs....I now closed it..

We basically wait about 12-24 hours for we do not get to authorizing them except one or two times/day. Problem is they are smart and determined..

I do not know why others do not get them - only additional answer is to ban all that look remotely suspect (and that will get some good folks in the ban also).

Wish I had a better answer. PETE
