Looking for a *real* discount? How about using the original Mafac Racers? You can get them pretty cheap off bike boom thrift shop specials.

Actually, it's pretty remarkable that you could find these very same brakes on some of the cheapest pieces of bicycling crap ever made, and also on some of the most expensive and most sublime bikes ever made. It's hard to think of any other component you can say that of except possibly handlebar tape.

And Dia Compe 981's.....

Two other candidates - Velox Rim Tape and generic tubes.

I bought mine from Lickbike: http://www.lickbike.com/searchsite.asp?SEARCH=paul

I have the touring canti, which to be honest I am not mad I bought, but not totally psyched. They work better than the cheap-o avid/cane creeks that were on the bike but not that much better. Plus they came with pads that don't use replaceable cartridges, I prefer just being able to replace the cartridges when they wear out.

That's funny because I have a set of both types of Paul cantis and they both came with cartridge pads. The Lickbike link also states they come with cartridge pads. I wonder if they changed the spec after you bought yours or somebody customized them before shipping them to you.

I'll tell you what, unless you just want the bling of Paul's...I'm not sure you can beat the Tektro CR720s. I put a set of these on my Salsa and and very happy. They are so much better than the crap Avid Shorty 4's I could never get to stop squealing!

++++ a million. No doubt the best bang for buck canti out there. Buy three pair for the one set of Pauls. I have both, so no bias on my part.

The Tektro CR720 is a centerpull? I thought, because of an earlier question Smiley asked, that he was in search of Paul Racer centerpulls, not Paul cantilver brakes.
