I am considering a stainless steel frame and have searched everwhere I can find, does anyone have an opinion between the two. The builder say's the xcr is easier to weld and has a slightly better finish. I want a "nekid" (naked) frame. Either frameset is the same price $1800.00 (EC90 or Ouzo Pro fork)

Thanks,
Jeff

Isn't that your answer?

Maybe?

I read somewhere that 953 is a lot "stronger" not sure that it makes a difference in a bike frame. The builder does both and said it was not a big difference in weldability or finish between the two.

Properly put together either will be more than strong enough. Let the builder pick based on what you told him you want. You'll get the best results that way.

If the builder is asking for your advice as to what tubes you think would be best I might politely suggest a different builder. I doubt he is asking, but I had to say it.

Either tube is cool IMO.

Is it possible to get a lugged stainless frame with a stainless fork? Whenever I see pictures of a gorgeous stainless frame it is always coupled with a carbon fork--yuck!

Carl Strongs site has tube dimensions in the material tech section. XCR appears to use thicker main tubes and a lighter set of stays. If you could mix and match you could make a frame with well under 900 grams bare tubes only. Rumor is XCR can only be had as a set though...I guess for its cost I like titanium in a good ti builders design over anybodys stainless but 1800 seems like a steel(sorry, couldnt help it). Happy new year to all.

Well it looks like the stainless bike is on hold thanks to this stupid forum classified section. Another Serotta is incoming

XCr is the only seamless stainless steel tubeset available. It is also the most expensive tubeset in the world, which I learned the hard way.

Ask Dave Wages, Ellis Cycles. My lugged 953 is in transit and frame is on his website. He did most of the stainless at Waterford prior to going solo.

I Haven't found any stainless fork blades yet, but there is hope with the new high strength stainless alloys currently being used in framebuilding. I'm keeping my eyes out..... me want.
