View Full Version : Cycling Goals for 2009?
Sandy

The year will be coming to an end soon. Any of you thought about some cycling goals for 2009?
My cycling goals are somewhat conservative, I think, but if I accomplish them, I will be a happy cyclist and person.
Goals-
Do some bagel run rides and other rides with Smiley (and Karen, Zap, and friends).
Do some easy club rides.
Perhaps lead an easy club "No One Gets Dropped" ride.
Ride a metric century with FMS Rider.
Ride with Pete, Spoke, and those in the Raleigh area if I am invited.
Do a group Smiley and Karen ride (or rides)
Meet some Serotta Forum members that I have not personally met.
See and ride again with some Serotta Forum members I know but have not seen for a while.
Apply some of what I hopefully learn from Ti Designs about how to really ride a bike.
So what are your cycling goals in 2009???
Sandy
My goal is just to keep riding.
I cut waaay back in 2007 for legit reasons but really beat myself up about it. In 2008 I just took it as it came and didn't sweat it. Probably rode about as much as in '07 but enjoyed it more. Rode very little in winter, but got back into a groove in the Spring and rode as often as ever in the summer and fall. Shorter rides - only one or two over 50 miles last year, but I enjoy those 30-40 mile rides as much as ever. And I can really make 'em last a while too as I get even slower.
I used to do 4-6 k miles per year every year. Now I'm probably down in the 2,000 range although I'm not tracking it so maybe a bit more or less. More like my first year of riding. Its enough to stay healthy and keep my muscle memory and a good spin. Beyond that, a little more on-bike conditioning doesn't seem to translate to much except on-bike so I'm cool with the reduced amount of riding. As long as it stays fun, and so far so good!
And, who knows, I've even been riding a new set of rollers quite consistently for the last several weeks, so maybe I'll go into the spring in good enough shape to get back into a bit more mileage next year. But I'm not gonna push it - it'll come because it feels right or not at all.

Mine are pretty similar to 2008:
1. Ride 5000 miles (I find it hard to believe I'll do 6K again but who knows?)
2. Lose weight (trying to hold the 202 range until spring and then I would like to get down to 190-195 range)
3. Better my TT times on our club course (another 30 seconds by seasons end will do nicely  )
New ones:
4. Rice more with my wife and son, niw that he's back into riding
5. Raise more money for the Davis Phinney Foundation (this one will be hard given the economic climate, but I might as well try).

- The Prouty
- At least two of Heather's centuries
- One charity ride (yeah, yeah, yeah. shut up.)

From an equipment stand point:
Get my Curtlo painted/powder coated and reassembled.
Dump my ill fitting Airborne or outfit it for my 15 y/o.
Get my boy's bikes back in decent shape.
From a riding stand point:
I very much reflect Ray's sentiments. While riding is great from a fitness stand point, I try to focus on enjoying it.
I would like to ride with my boys a little more.
Loss some weight and take some rides along the BRP.
Do at least 2-3 MTB rides.
Do a monument tour in DC.
Continue to do as many of the local centurys as I can manage.
Continue to lead my spring/summer Monday night Ramble.
Hook up with Saab at least once while he is still living int he area.
Try to get my wife and a very good friend riding.

2009 is an empty book for me, no goals, no plans, no calendar of events. It's been 30 years of riding for me, I've become bitter and angry with the sport and most of the people in it. I'll learn to ride at peace with myself or I'll give up the sport.

My cycling goal is for the economy to rebound enough for me to afford a new bike.
1. Don't crash
2. Find a challenge other than the Harpoon B2B
3. Get closer to Tom & Eric

2. Try some 'cross racing!
3. Start a new local club ride for developing women racers.

In January 2008, at 46 years old, I started riding my old bike to get rid of some body fat. I went from 75 miles a week to 125, and then last September I started riding with a local club for the first time in about 15 years. It was depressing to discover how slow I had become.
Well, the fat is gone. I'm now riding with the group three days a week (and doing 200 mi per week). My fitness is improving, but I can't stay in the front group to the end of a ride.
The goal for 2009 is not only to finish with the front group, but do it on my circa 1990 Serotta. I've promised myself when I can hang in I'll get one of those new-fangled plastic bikes.

Next year I want to learn to train smarter, maybe get a coach to see what a novice 50 year old can do. I logged 6500 miles since I started 7 months ago on the Ottrott and the improvements are dramatic but I know there is much more to learn; balance on the bike, fit, pedaling and climbing technique, sprinting, etc...don't think I can do that without a teacher.

1) Be a better ride partner
2) Ride some new territory. got a hanker'n to explore NE Washington State.
3) Not much of a joiner but I just applied for RUSA membership - I want to ride some Brevets
4) Be content with what I have (materially).
5) As much as I have control over it, stay healthy.
I think thats about it

Well,
I met my '08 goal if 1,500 miles and am setting my '09 goal at 3,000 miles. I also want to complete a century in '09. And of course, try and get another bike out of my wife! :D

My two goals for 2009 are to get tenure and put in my first racing season. The latter is unlikely to work out well enough to pay the bills, so I hope the former does.

2. Ride/Train Smarter than I did in 2008
3. Work on TT
4. Upgrade a Cat on the Road
5. Have Fun Doing it

I will try for another comeback, and attempt to get back to my post 2005 condition. It's hard to believe it's been 3 years since my big accident, but now I'm free to at least ride when I want, hopefully rejoin my old club and hope to keep up with the fast guys (and gals!).

Stay healthy in the Spring. If I can stay healthy (last year I was sick 3 times, including pneumonia once) I'll have a great year. Trying it a little different this year. I won't try to get to my 'riding' weight until later in the year... :)

I want to get my California Triple Crown on my fixed gear. (My primary goal and the only one I really have my sights set on)
Do 2 more double centuries to make the 1000 mile club.
Complete the San Francisco 200k, 300k, 400k and 600k brevets
other thoughts that have entered my mind:
Gold Rush Randonee (1200k unsupported in 90 hours)
Markelyville Deathride
Cal Triple Crown Stage Race (DMD, Terrible Two and whatever that 3rd one is make this a rather daunting task with 45,000 feet in 600 miles).

After getting back in 2007 to real cycling and tri after a 10year break (work transfer), I have set some goals, but want to keep it fun, not overly obsessive.
Race in three sprint and two Olympic distance tris with my son, and get my bike leg over 20mph average.
Ride around my home in the hills of Eastern PA, rather than driving to flatter roads.
Get my wife out on the road more with some local group rides together.
Finish building up all the bikes I have in progress before picking up another frame. This is perhaps the least realistic goal; darn that stinking eBay!
Do a metric century or charity ride.
Keep my promise never to do another marathon! Perhaps a 10K or two.
Ride with my son's Sunday group around Newtown (fast bunch!)
Spend more time on the road than on the trainer in the basement.
I like these reolutions way better than promising to cut back on Twinkies.

I haven't even thought about concrete goals for '09, still frustrated by the weather's conspiring to prevent me from achieving my '08 mileage goal: I'm only 80 miles short of that metric, but we're buried in ice storms!
But if I had to outline some sort of goal(s) for next year, I guess they would be
- meet or exceed this year's mileage goal (7,500 miles)
- spend more time doing both faster and slower club rides, rather than doing all of them in that middle gray zone
- lead some of the above
- ward off injury By Any Means Necessary
and, if I'm feeling especially adventurous (which at this point seems unlikely and/or uncharacteristic)
- try my hand at racing
- run for club President

goals for 09- more miles than 08, get weight below 150 and keep it there(currently 155 so that is no biggie). better time in hotter'n'hell 100- 4'29 min last year. Better triple bypass time (7h58m) . Ride when I think it's too cold so I can hang with the hammerheads on the hill jam rides all year instead of just from about june on.

have fun with as little crashing as possible...what else///who knows maybe make sweet love while riding my bicycle...d

I want to patch all the punctured tubes that I've accumulated over the years, and not buy any new tubes this year.
Or maybe I should find a more realistic goal.

I've got a pretty good list for this year. I figure since I'm going to be 64 I'd better bag as many of the big rides as I can now before they become out of reach, which unfortunately will happen relatively fast at this stage of the game. So the list, which is probably over optimistic but what the heck, includes: a Ventoux double and if at all possible a triple, the Barcelonnette 3-col loop, Colle delle Finestre, the Galibier-Croix de Fer loop, and a week-long or longer tour with my son in which we bag a bunch of big cols, assuming he comes over which he'd better because if he waits too long he's going to have to push me over the cols. I'd also like to bag a couple of the big cols in Italy, like the Stelvio and the Gavia
Not exactly riding goals, but bike related, sell my Spectrum Steel frame, a former frame of the month, and be down to two plastics, a Look and a Fuji. Acquire a Look Ultra frame (XL).
As for actual riding, once again considering 2000K on the track as a pipe dream, but will do some time trials. Otherwise, I'm pleased with my riding quality and volume. Being coached two to three times a week over the past year has worked wonders, even for an older faahhtt turning 67 in a month.
Will do the March CA trip with Pete, PaulE, Tom Byrne, and I hope flydhest if I can pry his head out of a book and a job. Going with my wife to a Cinghiale Cycling and Cooking tour in September in Tuscany. Otherwise being available for other adventures.
keno
I did a "comeback" in 2006 after a few years away from racing/riding in general. I got into some of the best condition of my life, dropped a bunch of weight and got a lot faster. Mid 2007 brought me a job relocation from Indiana to Pennsylvania and early 2008 brought another from PA to TX. It is been a turbulent and unforgiving period in the last year and I am squarely back where I was prior to 2006.
Goals?
1. Ride as much as I can, nothing structured, really. Just building base and getting fit.
2. Eat smarter. Cut the crap. Make better choices and eat a little less.
3. Get in the gym a minimum of two days a week.
4. Focus on my core strength and flexibility.
Three years ago, my job was different and not as demanding of my time. If I can achieve the above this year, then next year I will focus on more structure and perhaps a return to competition.

Long overdue, but the timing is right. For 2009 and beyond I'm outta here. I've tried a number of times to get people together to ride, it never happened. So, my theory is that people on the internet don't exist. No more forums, no more facebook, just the real world.

If you were serious about it you would start a new thread to announce your departure. History has shown that people who announce it buried in some unrelated thread are not truly committed to leaving.
and do those who threaten/promise to leave ever REALLY leave?
