Does anyone know if and old (late eighties) Shimano 6 speed cassette will work on an old (early nineties) 7 speed shimano hub? Thanks a lot.

Do you mean freewheel rather than cassette? Take a look at Sheldon Brown's (RIP) site for lots of good info.

The answer is maybe. Shimano 6-speed cassettes were uniglide which meant they had twist teeth, no index spline and a thread-on first cog. Dura-Ace was offered with an 11 (insert spinal tap joke here), so the threaded section was smaller than the 600. With 7-speed Shimano went to hyperglide with the index spline and the lockring with the tread on the ID of the cassette. The first generation of 7-speed hubs had threads on both inside and out and could be used for either. The simple answer is look at the hub. If there is a threaded section on the outside of the end of the cassette body it'll work for anything 'cept Dura-Ace.
Had I started drinking when I should have (when I got married), all this crap would have been wiped from my memory...
