Hey All –
I’m a clinical psychology graduate student, and am approaching the end of my training at the University of Houston, in Houston, TX (where the riding is pretty terrible). I’m in the process of interviewing for internship programs right now, and have received interviews at 11 programs in 10 cities. Of course, I’m going to choose the program based on fit with my training needs, but cycling is my outlet, and I would really like to choose a place that has decent riding as well. I’m primarily a roadie, and really enjoy cyclocross racing also. The clinical psychology internship is a 1-year gig, and for most of the programs to which I applied and received interviews, I am hoping that I will be able to procure a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship in the same city. Ideally, then, this will be a 3-year time commitment to the city where my wife and I will relocate.
What I’m hoping people can provide is a general idea of what the riding is like in each of these cities. I will be (or already have) interviewed in some of these locations, but most of that day is spent wandering between different offices in a medical center, trying to track down the people who are interviewing me. Because of this interviewing schedule, I really don’t have much time to see the city or surrounding countryside, and don’t have time to scope out the cycling scene. In many cases, I’ve never even been to, or spent any significant amount of time, in each of these locations.
FWIW, I have also lived and ridden in Minneapolis/St. Paul, NW Wisconsin, and eastern / southeastern WI, so I know that riding can be far better than in Houston.
The list of cities:
- Tucson, AZ
- Birmingham, AL
- Oklahoma City, OK
- Atlanta, GA
- Gainesville, FL
- Providence, RI
- Chicago, IL
- Los Angeles, CA
- Ann Arbor, MI
- Morgantown, WV
Thank you all in advance, I appreciate the insight you can provide.
-Eric
