I've decided that my xmas present to myself this year is going to be the Garmin 705 and was wondering where I'd find the best deal. Also, I'm planning on getting the cadence and heartrate option but was wondering if my chest strap and cadence unit from my 305 will work with the 705, so I could save a few bucks that way? Also it seems there's an additional option which includes maps on a memory chip and was wondering if I need that. Finally does the "team garmin" garmin do anything other look ugly??

TIA

Jim

i was actually considering the 705 as well. i noticed that it's sold with an american map chip for 100 more. does that mean that it ships with no map at all?

There's 705 NIB ad in the Serotta classifieds, posted by MUD, right now. Seems like a fair price. I don't have any affiliation with the poster of the ad. Just thought I'd point it out since you mentioned you are "in the market" for a 705. Merry Christmas.

I bought one on ebay last month (with the ebay coupon) and it got down to $331.25 shipped/no tax.

This was for the cadence 705 model (no map card though). I have been using it since and love it.

All the accessories from your 305 work with the 705. That said, the best deals I've seen on the 705 are those for the package that include the hr monitor strap, cadence sensor and the full US road maps (on micro-SD card or on a CD/DVD.)

Worst that happens is you have extra accessories. I've found it helpful to keep one hr monitor strap in the car and the other at home.

If you're after the best price, then either ebay, or Nashbar with one of their 15 or 20 percent off coupons.

Ebay + Live.com..Your never gonna beat that combo! I got a FULL bundle (including data card) for about $400.00 shipped...This was when Live.com was at 30%.

Good luck,

Steve

I've decided that my xmas present to myself this year is going to be the Garmin 705 and was wondering where I'd find the best deal.Jim, I trust you have done your homework and determined the Garmin 705 is an excellent unit. Can you share what makes a GPS unit a good buy?

For instance, if someone gave you an off-brand unit for Christmas, how would you know if it’s good or bad, whether to keep it or return it?

Actually its been 8% for a couple days now...sometimes goes to 20% if you have the right keywords...and, the 10% ebay discount is a 1 time deal (I think it ended in November).

So, thats PRETTY DARN CHEAP and someone is dreaming!

I dont think Live.com will ever be 30% again.

The ebay 10% coupon shows up every 2-3 months. I got one on Nov. 30th that expired on Dec. 1st. On Dec. 1st, live.com was 30% as well.

Didn't know it dropped down to 7%, but I guess my timing was lucky 12 days ago.

The main reason for my considering the 705 is actually not GPS related. I have a Powertap hub that I just upgraded to Ant+ which is supported by the Garmin.
The nice thing about the Garmin cycle specific units is the GPS functionality bundled with cadence, power, hr, etc.

I found out my wife bought me an off-brand GPS for Christmas and I really didn't know whether too keep it or not -- wanted to learn more. I didn't want or need a GPS right now, so after being honest with her she returned it.
