I remember being a kid and coming home one day excited to tell my mom that my friend Rob had gotten cable TV (first in the neighborhood) and there was this channel called MTV that played music with videos to go along with the songs.
The two things I remember about that first glimpse of MTV were a total hottie named Martha Quinn and the video for "Mexican Radio"!

It actually rhymes with the previous line, but it's more a powerful message on its own.

Hank -

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill,
He sounds too blue to fly.
The midnight train is whining low,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.
I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by.
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry.

Gio -- I think Elvis' angels wanna wear your red Sidi shoes.

How about:

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane.
Please don't say we'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain.

we have a winner. I haven't watched much of elvis's talk show, but it sure makes me feel old. had a good moment today on campus; our college station which played grunge when I was hired back in 93 was spinning London Calling followed by Talking Heads, Once in a Lifetime (same as it ever was). can that be 1984 already?

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
wife
And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?

...
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

...
And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

this song is of course dq'd for the current competition because its rhyme is so weak, but it was good to hear it at my relatively boring little catholic university. gave me some hope for the future, cause london is burning, and I live by the river

John Hartford - LP: Nobody Knows What You Do

Golden Globe Award

I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award
For those golden globes of yours, they’re so fine
So round, so firm, so fully packed,
They’re just right for my hands.
Make’s me wanna go around and around your world,
And then go round again.
I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award,
For both of your globes.
You can put them in my face just any old time.
Oh, those golden globes, they ain’t none better,
I gotta have ‘em both, cause they both go together
Gonna see you get that Golden Globe award.

I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award
For those golden globes of yours, they’re so neat.
The finest globes I know about,
Or know I’ve seen,
In or out of Penthouse, Oui,
Or Playboy magazine.
I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award,
For both of your globes.
You can put them in my face just any old time.
Oh, those golden globes, they ain’t none better,
I gotta have ‘em both, cause they both go together
Gonna see you get that Golden Globe award.

Break

I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award
For those golden globes of yours, oh they’re so fine
This morning when you took your bath,
And stood in the sun to dry
I was inspired when I looked up,
And saw them in the sky.
I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award,
For both of your globes.
You can put them in my face just any old time.
Oh, those golden globes, they ain’t none better,
I gotta have ‘em both, cause they both go together
Gonna see you get that Golden Globe award,
For both of your sunbeams,
I’m gonna see you get that Golden Globe award.

The Dangling Conversation
Paul Simon
It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs,
The borders of our lives.

And you read your Emily Dickinson,
And I my Robert Frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we've lost.
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm,
Couplets out of rhyme,
In syncopated time
And the dangled conversation
And the superficial sighs,
Are the borders of our lives.

Yes, we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
"Can analysis be worthwhile?"
"Is the theater really dead?"
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You're a stranger now unto me
Lost in the dangling conversation.
And the superficial sighs,
In the borders of our lives.

from one of my favourite bands...

From Four Little Songs:
"Two: This lady’s shaped like the Tour de France
A thousand wheels besieged the city of romance
The cigarettes all burn like hay (hey, hey)
A yellow jersey stained red, cabernet"

From
Power Ballad For Ozzy Osbourne:

Rock band play rock and roll all day.
Rock man say rock and roll will never die.

Ozzy, dear old Ozzy,
You are rock and roll to me.
Half-deaf, drunk, and drooling
With your nagging, chronic knees.
Miss Cocaine closed her sugar thighs.
All pigeons here are spared.
From what I see, the only thing
That's rocking is your chair.

Oh, Ozzy, dear old Ozzy,
You are every young man's dream,
Holed up in a castle
With your life lived on TV.
But our world desires your spitting fire,
Rebellion, hate, and rage.
You've won the right to live your life
Inside your pretty cage. (Brit rock!)

Oh, Ozzy, dear old Ozzy,
Will we ever see the day
When the Lions of the Fuzztone,
They return to rule and play?
Have they all enlargened prostates?
A testicular self-exam
Is where this crazy train
Lets off this wild and crazy man. Crazy.

"Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombassa in a barroom drinking gin."

I once received a postcard with no words on it. Just a Bombay label sweated off a gin bottle. Postmarked Mombassa. Only later did I find out it was from a friend I worked with years before who was riding his bike across Africa.

I miss Warren Zevon. A brilliant lyricist.

Acoustic Guitar
by Stephin Merrit of the Magnetic Fields

Acoustic Guitar,
I'm gonna make you a star,
Get your picture all over the world
Acoustic Guitar,
You can have your own car,
Just bring me back my girl

She always loved the sound of your strum
You made her think maybe I wasn't so dumb
She tends to faint at the sound of a drum
Cuz she's folk so play and maybe she'll come

Acoustic Guitar, how lovely you are
With your inlays of mother of pearl
Be a good guitar and you could go far
Just bring me back my girl

She always said that you were the one
That could make her move her cute little bum
You understand where she's coming from
Which I obviously don't, or she wouldn't be gone

Acoustic guitar, if you think I play hard
Well you could have belonged to Steve Earle
Or Charo OR GWAR,
I could sell you tomorrow
So bring me back my girl
You'd better bring me back my girl

Okay, the dude dropped 3 ham handed guitar players/bands as a reference and rhymes charo, gwar and tomorrow... plus you gotta love how he threathens the guitar...

i am jealous of this writer almost every time I listen to his songs.. Esp. the songs on '69 love songs' and 'I'..

...actually it's like nails on a chalk board to me (and I like Steve Miller) but it fits....

I heat up, I cant cool down
You got me spinnin
round and round
round and round and round it goes
Where it stops nobody knows

Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burnin flame
Burnin flame full of desire
Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher

Abra-abra-cadabra
I want to reach out and grab ya
Abra-abra-cadabra
Abracadabra

You make me hot, you make me sigh
You make me laugh, you make me cry
Keep me burnin for your love
With the touch of a velvet glove

Abra-abra-cadabra
I want to reach out and grab ya
Abra-abra-cadabra
Abracadabra

I feel the magic in your caress
I feel magic when I touch your dress
Silk and satin, leather and lace
Black panties with an angels face

I see magic in your eyes
I hear the magic in your sighs
Just when I think Im gonna get away
I hear those words that you always say

Abra-abra-cadabra
I want to reach out and grab ya
Abra-abra-cadabra
Abracadabra

Every time you call my name
I heat up like a burnin flame
Burnin flame full of desire
Kiss me baby, let the fire get higher

I heat up, I cant cool down
My situation goes round and round
I heat up, I cant cool down
My situation goes round and round
I heat up, I cant cool down
My situation goes round and round

Yeah, he's gonna make a fortune.

Shot by shot by shot."

Neither of my favorite couplets from the pop/rock canon rhyme, but they resonate with me for compressing such a vast amount of, well, stuff, into so short a passage:

"Didn't it feel good just sitting there talking
or lying there not talking?"
(Joni Mitchell, "Help Me")

"Our president's crazy:
Did you hear what he said?"
(David Byrne/Talking Heads, "Making Flippy Flop")

but if it has to rhyme, than I'll go with the opening lines from The Rolling Stones' "Sway":

"Didja ever wake up to find
a day that broke up your mind
destroying your notion of circular time?"

Bruce has some great lyrics:

From "Badlands"
Poor man wanna be rich
Rich man wanna be king
King ain't satisfied
Til he rules everything

&

From "Youngstown"
Now sir you tell me the world's changed
Once I made you rich enough
Rich enough to forget my name

&

From Reason to Believe
Seen a man standing over a dead dog
By a highway in a ditch
He's looking down kind of puzzled
Poking that dog with a stick
Got his car door flung open
He's standing out on Highway 31
Like if he stood there long enough
That dog get up and run

I was listening to my ipod on my drive home yesterday and a great tune came through from Joni Mitchell. Set to shuffle makes an ipod the greatest radio station on earth, nothing but YOUR programming. I think this is from Turbulent Indigo:

"Who you gonna get to do the dirty work, when all the slaves are free."
Passion Play

Some of the greatest linked ryhmes and free-verse exist in John Lennon's lyrics like in "I am the Walrus", "Happiness is a Warm Gun," and many others.

A huge fan of her music. One of the best in the industry period.

A Case of You:
Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constant in the darkness
Where’s that at?
If you want me I’ll be in the bar

Edith and the Kingpin:
Edith in the ring
The passed-over girls are conferring
The man with the diamond ring is purring
All claws for now withdrawn
One by one they bring
His renegade stories to her
His crimes and his glories to her
In challenge they look on
Women he has wanted grow old too soon
He tilts their tired faces
Gently to the spoon

Raised on Robbery:
I’m a pretty good cook
I’m sitting on my groceries
Come up to my kitchen
I’ll show you my best recipe
I try and I try but I can’t save a cent
I’m up after midnight, cooking
Trying to make my rent
I’m rough but I’m pleasin’
I was raised on robbery

River:
He tried hard to help me
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I’m so hard to handle
I’m selfish and I’m sad
Now I’ve gone and lost the best baby
That I ever had
Oh I wish I had a river
I could skate away on
I wish I had a river so long
I would teach my feet to fly
Oh I wish I had a river
I made my baby say goodbye

Joni pours herself into her music Beautiful stuff.

Maybe not the best but what came to mind

"is it still over are we still through
since my phone still aint ringing
i assume it still aint you"
Randy Travis

"my time is a piece of wax, fallen on a termite,
who's chokin' on the splinters"
Beck

"Excess Ain't Rebellion.
You're Drinking What They're Selling.
Your Self-Destruction Doesn't Hurt Them.
Your Chaos Won't Convert Them.
They're So Happy To Rebuild It.
You'll Never Really Kill It.
Yeah, Excess Ain't Rebellion.
You're Drinking What They're Selling.
Excess Ain't Rebellion.
You're Drinking,
You're Drinking,
You're Drinking What They're Selling"
Cake

Totally 100% non PC but my Favorite:

"I'm sorry, there must be a mix-up
You want me to fix up lyrics while the President gets his d*** s****d?
........
Skibbedy-be-bop, a-Christopher Reeves
Sonny Bono, skis horses and hittin some trees (HEY!)
How many retards'll listen to me
and run up in the school shootin when they're pissed at a
teach-er, her, him, is it you is it them?
"Wasn't me, Slim Shady said to do it again!"
Damn! How much damage can you do with a pen?
Man I'm just as ????ed up as you woulda been
if you woulda been, in my shoes, who woulda thought
Slim Shady would be somethin that you woulda bought
that woulda made you get a gun and shoot at a cop
I just said it - I ain't know if you'd do it or no"

Big Bottom

The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'
That's what I said
The looser the waistband, the deeper the quicksand
Or so I have read

My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo

Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

I met her on Monday, 'twas my lucky bun day
You know what I mean
I love her each weekday, each velvety cheek day
You know what I mean

My love gun's loaded and she's in my sights
Big game is waiting there inside her tights, yeah

Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about mud flaps, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

My baby fits me like a flesh tuxedo
I'd like to sink her with my pink torpedo

Big bottom, big bottom
Talk about bum cakes, my girl's got 'em
Big bottom drive me out of my mind
How could I leave this behind?

In olden days a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking now Heaven knows..

Anything goes.

Most guys today, that women prize today are just silly gigolos.

Good authors too who once used better words, now only use four letter words writing prose..

Anything Goes.

Berlin anyone?

If you could dance instead of sing
I'd learn to love you somehow
If you could sing instead of dance
I'd take you home with me now

Let the old year die with a fond goodbye

[QUOTE=giordana93]god, there's so many, but this one popped into my head first:

"I said, "I'm so happy, I could die,"
She said, "drop dead," and left with another guy"

That's Elvis Costello, "Red Shoes," from My Aim Is True.

A certain Northwestern singer-songwriter has a line that Co-Motion ought to steal for an ad--"they say that misery loves company, well, happy needs company, too." Double points for that source.

On a different note, the discovery that "party" and "Bacardi" rhyme was the splitting of the atom in the world of rhyme.

Bob Marley, "War": (I know, I know...eventhough it comes from a Haile Selassie speech, its a great song)

Until the philosophy which hold one race superior
And another
Inferior
Is finally
And permanently
Discredited
And abandoned -
Everywhere is war -
Me say war.

That until there no longer
First class and second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes -
Me say war.

That until the basic human rights
Are equally guaranteed to all,
Without regard to race -
Dis a war.

That until that day
The dream of lasting peace,
World citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion to be pursued,
But never attained -
Now everywhere is war - war.

And until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
that hold our brothers in Angola,
In Mozambique,
South Africa
Sub-human bondage
Have been toppled,
Utterly destroyed -
Well, everywhere is war -
Me say war.

War in the east,
War in the west,
War up north,
War down south -
War - war -
Rumours of war.
And until that day,
The African continent
Will not know peace,
We Africans will fight - we find it necessary -
And we know we shall win
As we are confident
In the victory

Of good over evil -
Good over evil, yeah!
Good over evil -
Good over evil, yeah!
Good over evil -
Good over evil, yeah! /fadeout/

Love the lie and lie the love
Hangin' on, with a push and shove
Possession is the motivation
that is hangin' up the God-damn nation
Looks like we always end up in a rut (everybody now!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?

Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs
Twisted children killin' frogs
Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs
Tired old ladies kissin' dogs
Hate the human, love that stinking mutt (I can't stand it!)
Try to make it real — compared to what?

The President, he's got his war
Folks don't know just what it's for
Nobody gives us rhyme or reason
Have one doubt, they call it treason
We're chicken-feathers, all without one gut (God damn it!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what? (Sock it to me, now)

Church on Sunday, sleep and nod
Tryin' to duck the wrath of God
Preacher's fillin' us with fright
Tryin' to tell us what he thinks is right
He really got to be some kind of nut (I can't use it!)
Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?

Where's that bee and where's that honey?
Where's my God and where's my money
Unreal values, crass distortion
Unwed mothers need abortion
Kind of brings to mind ol' young King Tut (He did it now)
Tried to make it real — compared to what?!

And I hear them say

Hey you've got to hide your love away
Hey you've got to hide your love away

How can I even try

Hearing them, seeing them
In the state I'm in

Nice one! I counter with Pharcyde, "Ya Momma". I highlighted my favorite rhyme:

Watch out, I'm thinking about your mother to a funky beat
I went to your house, and she licked me on the cheek
I said excuse me lady, but I remember seeing you at the Palladium
way back in September
Cause you was beatboxin' for Lou Rawls
In some bright red boxer drawers
You said ya moms was pretty and young
But she's old as dirt and got hair on her tongue

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that youve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that its now or never
Everybody knows that its me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when youve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joes still pickin cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that its moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But theres gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that youre in trouble
Everybody knows what youve been through
From the bloody cross on top of calvary
To the beach of malibu
Everybody knows its coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Where famous dancers scraped the tears up off the street, dressed down in rags
Running into the darkness, some hurt bad, some really dying

Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down

There is an elegant simplicity to Randy Newman's stuff, particularly his 'Rednecks' Album, to wit:

'Marie'

You looked like a princess the night we met
With your hair piled up high
I will never forget
I'm drunk right now baby
But I've got to be
Or I never could tell you
What you mean to me

CHORUS
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie
I loved you the first time I saw you
And I always will love you Marie

You're the song that the trees sing when the wind blows
You're a flower you're a river you're a rainbow
Sometimes I'm crazy
But I guess you know
And I'm weak and I'm lazy
And I've hurt you so
And I don't listen to a word you say
When you're in trouble I just turn away
CHORUS

-OR- from another album, the ever-popular:

'You Can Leave Your Hat On'

Baby take off your coat...(real slow)
Baby take off your shoes...(here I'll take your shoes)
Baby take off your dress
Yes yes yes
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on
You can leave your hat on

Go on over there and turn on the light...no all the lights
Now come back here and stand on this chair...that's right
Raise your arms up in to the air...shake 'em
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live
You give me a reason to live

Suspicious minds are talking
Trying to tear us apart
They say that my love is wrong
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
I know what love is

Sorry - Just one more. This is killer stuff, IMO:

It Makes No Difference attributed to Robbie Robertson (...?...)

It makes no diff'rence where I turn
I can't get over you and the flame still burns
It makes no diff'rence, night or day
The shadow never seems to fade away

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Now there's no love
As true as the love
That dies untold
But the clouds never hung so low before

It makes no diff'rence how far I go
Like a scar the hurt will always show
It makes no diff'rence who I meet
They're just a face in the crowd
On a dead-end street
And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep
And the dawn don't rescue me no more

Without your love I'm nothing at all
Like an empty hall it's a lonely fall
Since you've gone it's a losing battle
Stampeding cattle
They rattle the walls

And the sun don't shine anymore
And the rains fall down on my door

Well, I love you so much
It's all I can do
Just to keep myself from telling you
That I never felt so alone before

Paul Simon

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls.

And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies.

My mind's distracted and diffused
My thoughts are many miles away
They lie with you when you're asleep
And kiss you when you start your day.

And as a song I was writing is left undone
I don't know why I spend my time
Writing songs I can't believe
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.

And so you see I have come to doubt
All that I once held as true
I stand alone without beliefs
The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time,

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
So don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don't think twice, it's all right
