It seems like the popular thing to do is to convert 8sp Campagnolo hubs to 10sp , but I would like to convert a 10sp hub to 8sp. I realize that spacer kits are available to accomplish this so that I could keep the 10sp hub and just respace 9sp cassettes, but I would prefer to use actual 8sp freehubs and cassettes if I can make them work.

The hub I have is 2005 Centaur 9/10sp whose internals appear to be compatible with Record and Chorus (at least from the parts catalogue drawings) - will an 8sp Record freehub fit on it, or are the axles on the 10sp hub larger than they were in the 8sp years?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You may want to contact Branford Bike about that... they have a lot of expertise with the interchangability of Campy parts.

Campagnolo never made an 8 speed freewheel body for the aluminium-axle 1999 Record type hubs.

Okay, I get it now. Converting an 8sp hub to 10sp requires the early 9sp freehub body from the small axle hubs of the late 90's while there is no retrofit to convert a 10sp hub to 8sp. Bummer. I guess it's going to be spacers for me then.

Thanks!

You can often get those early 9 speed hubs. I have a nice one in a dodgy wheel for example. I'm running Athena hubs on my race bike still.

But... you should not find it too difficult to find nice 8 speed hubs.
