Hi,

The SRAM vs. Campy/Campag thread brought up a question I've had for a while. Why aren't there 165mm crankset options for Campagnolo? I would like to switch the group on my gf's bike to Campagnolo, but I'm not sure what kind of 165mm crankset to use. Spécialités TA?

She currently has a 10 speed ultegra crank she loves, but can I use it with a Campagnolo set-up? What has to change/not change?

Thanks.

No need to change the crank. All 10 speed cranks should work with any 10 speed drivetrain. Campy doesn't offer 165mm because they would not sell many.

why change the drivetrain? if she's use to Shimano, use it. Cheaper to pick up used stuff on eBay than Campy.

Oddly, even though the 10 speed brifters are larger, she finds them more comfortable than the 9 speed Shimano brifters. That said, she recently had a chance to play with a friend's Record bike and she preferred the feel infinitely.

Believe me I'm a Shimano guy (I'm Japanese) but I've also been using Shimano since high school (200GS haha) but my hands aren't exactly large either. As it was getting colder in October, I really started re-thinking the brifter issue... its a bit hard to wrap my hands, esp with gloves and when they're cold and slipping...

If you don't mind "mixing and matching," check out Sugino Cospea/Alpina cranks. It comes in 165-175mm length:

At $165 its reasonably priced, fairly light and has a great polish.

Just bought a Stronglight compact for my wife's little 49 cm, 650 wheeled bike (very nicely turned out), from Wheel and Sprocket on eBay.

Somewhere around $80...

for the small handed woman in all of us check out the SRAM brifters with the new adjustable reach/throw for this year throughout the line. My fiancee' has the smallest hands I've ever seen on a human being and she struggles with her shimanos. I got the opportunity to have her put her hands on a set of rivals fully adjusted in a got an ear to ear grin they're definately the ticket for women.

geez I'm out of it. I didn't notice that the adjustable reach is now available on force and rival... hmm...

these are 9 speed and don't know a thing about them, but they do have adjustable reach... i was looking at shimano shifters for myself just a few minutes ago and saw them, and then oddly enough just read this post for the first time..

good luck.

yeah, i think there's a 10 speed version too but I believe its an ultegra level brifter with shims in the kit. It works (my gf has shims) but at the same time I'd like to try a completely different brifter.

btw, I also just noticed Specialized offers shims for Shimano brifters. 9 speed (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?a=b&minisite=10029&eid=367&spid=41916&language=US) and 10 speed (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?eid=367&spid=41914)
(Although I had no idea that DA has a 7800 and 7801 shifter...)

Campy does make one 165mm crank, it belongs to their track group.

I use 165mm crank and Ergo on my road bikes, every year I told the Campy sales folks and wrote them a email their need to have at least one 165mm double or triple crank.

Record comes with 170 175 and 180 (177.5 is gone I think), one can argue the market for 180mm just as small as 165mm but they are making them.

If it cost them more to make them, make them in Record and charge lots of money for it.

For now, I am using Shimano Ultegra with Phil Wood outboard BB, works well for me.
