is it safe to ride from austin to Krause springs in spicewood?

how do you get out there? is hwy 71 safe to ride on for 26 miles?
ride bee caves road to hwy 71 then up hwy71?

any part of 71 just turn to two lanes each with very small or no shoulder?

You could ride on 71, but I say you probably would not want to. It has turned into a high velocity freeway in the last ten years. Lots of angry drivers going 25 mph over the speed limit. If you can drive out to Krause Springs, it is a great base camp for ranch road rides west of Hwy 71 toward Round Mountain.

There's lot of good places to ride, but HW71 is not one of them. Made that mistake ONCE riding to Pace Bend park from Austin and meeting wife there. Krause Springs is quite a bit further out.

71 is 6" shoulder most of the way. Yes, inches.

that stretch isn't safe in a car, much less a bike. many deaths every year. that said, the county roads around spicewood are sweet.

best way is to hit from the south west, 1826 to 150 to rr12. then left on post "death match"(meaning safe after this point) hamilton pool road(rr3238). out aways then north on old spicewood road.

or brave 71 for a shorter route. its not great but there are worse roads to ride on.
