I was watching Susan Tesdechi on video. I knew she sang blues but didn't realize she played guitar...and well. Never saw a girl play blues guitar before but she is good...also, Derek Trucks ain't bad either.

Give a listen to the 'Joyful Noise' album by the Derek Trucks Band. Covers a wide range of musical styles and includes a cut with his wife Susan. Good stuff!

Susan Tedeschi's album "Hope and Desire" is excellent, too.

You know they are married - I saw them play at the tractor tavern in ballard a few years back where they played joyful noise for an encore... derek playing note for note on his slide guitar to susans singing. it was beautiful

I had heard about Susan and knew that Derek's uncle was in the Allman Bros Band, but didn't get the connection. Anyway...they are great.

I used to go see Susan back when she only had one album out. Back then, you could walk right up to the stage and watch her play from 10 or 15 feet away. Great music with an incredible intensity.

Saw them this summer, both great talents. Unfortunately it was obvious we were one of the first shows on the tour and they were using us as a practice audience. They should've refunded half our ticket prices (or practiced more before going live)

Has Shanon Curfman (?) ever gotten anything going?

++ on Raitt and Davies, seen 'em both, awesome.

Rory Block.

I don't think she's ever done any electric, but one of the finest acoustic blues players around. Haven't heard from her lately, but I saw her a few times in the '80s and '90s and she was pretty incredible. Bonnie Raitt without the pop songs (not that there's anything wrong with the pop songs, Rory's just more of a purist).

Anyone ever listen to Tracy Nelson? And of course no one could omit Etta
James from their all time list. I agree with the coments about Dere and Susan...saw them in concert together and it was a great evening.

"Bessie Smith earned the title of “Empress of the Blues” by virtue of her forceful vocal delivery and command of the genre. Her singing displayed a soulfully phrased, boldly delivered and nearly definitive grasp of the blues. In addition, she was an all-around entertainer who danced, acted and performed comedy routines with her touring company. She was the highest-paid black performer of her day and arguably reached a level of success greater than that of any African-American entertainer before her."
imho
cheers

Bessie and Etta and Janis were great blues SINGERS. But the original thread was about female blues GUITARISTS, no? There are a lot fewer of them, but there are some damn fine ones. Most of 'em we've never heard of.

Sue Foley and Joanna Connor are a couple more ax players that come to mind, and Jo-Ann Kelly has to go on any blues guitarist list, male or female.
