I know some were waiting to see where lickbike.com pricing would fall with respect to European dealers.

Here you go with rounding to the nearest $50:

$1050 -- 2009 Centaur Alloy 10
$1350 -- 2009 Centaur Carbon 10
$2000 -- 2009 Chorus 11
$2800 -- 2009 Record 11
$3000 -- 2009 Super Record 11

http://www.lickbike.com/sectionsublist.aspx?SECTION='0040'&SUBSECTION='100'&SECTIONNAME='Groups%20(Parts)'&SUBSECTIONNAME='ROAD'

Notice this diatribe on 'all the BS in this industry':

Thoughts? Comments?

Anyone gotten their Campy orders delivered from Europe yet?

I've just seen 2009 Centaur 10 Alloy @ $774, and 2009 Centaur carbon @ $1024 landed on the 'Bay. Add in the 25% Live.com discount, and these seem like the buys of the year.

I understand why the dealers are upset with the lower gray market prices but I've never had a Campy or Shimano part that needed to be returned while it was still under warranty.

I think this is a bad time to be selling Campagnolo groups online; the way the Euro dropped like it did has suddenly made European online shops very good value. Some of the Euro retailers are selling under US dealer cost. Poor dealers :(

I am sorry, my hobby is getting way to expensive. I think I will keep what I have and make due with 9 speeds !

In a way, it's like being a kid again when owning record-level stuff was so out of my price range as to be a fantasy. I'm guessing that more and more of us will decide we are happy enough with Centaur.

My buddy John has about 10 of these groups that he'd be happy to sell for about $2,000.00.

He is a great guy, I will vouch for his reputation as I have spent many thousands of $$$ buying bike parts and frames from him.

PM me for his info...

Are you sure that was Super Record 11, not Record 11? Your SR price is ~$250 better than the current Bellati price. Record 11 is listed at $1660.

They are about $2,000.00 for a Super Record groupset...

Buy it domestically from my buddy. He has a bunch of Super Record Groupsets...I'd buy one in a heartbeat, but Im a tried and true Shimano guy.

Let me know if interested.

I emailed comobike directly and the invoice was right under 1600 for it but it was not in stock at the moment for super record. I didn't want to pay for something that was not in stock being overseas and all.

I bought a lot from Western Bikes and Bikesomewhere this year and last one as well. Nashbar on occassion. I will buy from Totalcycling and did spend time on Lickbike's website, but their site was pretty weak, I didn't feel comfortable on it (they seemed to have improved it greatly). I can't see the need for 11 speeds, Campy stuff lasts a very long time and I'd rather put the money towards some fly wheels.

I worked with one of the guys selling on Ebay to break his Super Record group into three pieces and used the MS Live Cahback on each since there is a $200 max on the 25% cashback. I wound up saving roughly $500.00 on top of the already great price. My net works out to about $1600 delivered.

Give it a try....still waiting to build it up, but it is beautiful stuff.

unrelated to the thread, but i've warrantied quite a few D/A 10sp rear derailleurs. Most, if not all, are from the 2007 model year.

Please don't remind me about sterlings collapse. I finished paying my UK student loans whilst the dollar was around 2:1 with it :(
Brit online shops:
probikekit
parker international
ribble cycles
dotbike
totalcycling
merlin cycles
high on bikes
dave hinde (I would probably avoid these guys)

I'm probably missing a few. Some German shops can be extremely competitive too. Jedi Sport and bike24 come to mind. I guess the US importers bought all those components with the old tEuro rate, but now they are getting undercut from abroad.

Waldo

Bike24 has full 2009 Record 11 for €1151 (VAT subtracted) = $1,463.68 USD, plus €30.00 shipping. Cheaper than SRAM Red.

Totalcycling.com = totally flawless buying experience, great prices, better service than I've had from US mail order shops. Shipping takes about a week and you can track it every step of the way.

+1 www.totalcycling.com

I've ordered several items from their site....very reasonable shipping (only fractionally more expensive than domestic retailers). Always received what I expected, and rather quickly.

They currently have:

2009 Centaur (alloy) = $576
2009 Centaur (carbon) = $746

And if you add up the parts, the 2009 Super Record comes to $1970.

And shipping is about $22 with conversion.

I've been looking around totalcycling.com and am very tempted to take advantage of the current exchange rate with the British Pound.

A couple of general questions to anyone who has ordered from any overseas website... did US Customs open the package or delay delivery ? And, were there any additional COD charges for duty ?

I've never had a customs delay, but some items, like frames, are subject to a tariff. The standard flat rate packages containing bike components seem to go through quickly with no tarriff. Those often arrive via the US mail service, if shipped by Parcel Force from the UK or DHL in Germany. I've had packages shipped by UPS charged small tarriffs of about 4%.

You can expect to be charged a foreign currency exchange fee of close to 3%.

I just had one of three packages from Bike 24 in Germany lost after it made it to San Francisco. I got two of the three a week after they arrived in the US, but the third is still missing a month later. Bike 24 will eventually ship a replacement package (with two Record cranks in it!). Good thing I didn't need the cranks right away.

- US customs didn't open my package
- no additional COD charges

it was literally better than ordering from performance or competitive cyclist, everything on their site is in stock and ready to ship, and they email you a tracking number as soon as it ships (usually the next morning after your order).

I see that Total Cycling's prices include VAT. Is the VAT deducted for sales to the US?

kaze
11-16-2008, 07:42 PM
Thanks for the feedback Dave & ecl2k.

Regarding the VAT, yes I believe that it is deducted on US sales. If you click the USA flag on the upper right corner of the page, it adjusts to USD and removes the "inc VAT" from the prices (if you do the currency conversion manually and compare, you'll see the difference).

Now I just need a financial analyst or a fortune teller to tell me where the bottom of the British Pound is :)

And then buy a Colnago at an extremely loooooow price from Mike at Maestro...Funny how its all turned around.

Just sayin'

Have we been getting hosed w/ bike prices like we were with oil prices? So now the demand is gone? I mean, man I can barely believe those prices.

Who was getting hosed by gas prices? No one in the US! Even at $4 a gallon, it was cheaper than the UK. Generally, bike prices are lower in the US. A basic Specialized Allez costs around 550 pounds in Britain, which used to be $1100, but is probably more like 8-900 now, which is more like the US price, and includes our 17.5% sales tax.

I bet a lot of current US stock of Campagnolo and Colnago was brought in with a high euro. This is probably what is making the price difference so shocking right now. Another chunk of it will be the annoying "premium euro-brand experience" extra price.

There is no easily interpreted list. The tariff schedules are not hard to find online, but you may spend an hour reading them and then only have a vague idea if a product is truly subject to a duty. That's why some packages get charged and others with the same items do not. I came to the conclusion that tires, chains and shifters should not be charged. Frames should be, but it's not consistent. Only the government could come up with rules this vague.

At a time when domestic e-tailers like Competitive Cyclist just keep raising their prices sky high too!

I picked up a Record 10 group w/ the "red" brifters for the same price I coulda got Super 11. Damn!
